Tournaments support shelter

-

Champions for Northwest Arkansas Children’s Shelter will have two opportunities to support the shelter while demonstrating their athletic prowess.

Proceeds from the 20th annual Golf Classic and the ninth annual Kickball for the Kids will support the shelter’s mission, emergency care and case management, said Raegin Callaway, corporate volunteer and events manager. “In the past year, the shelter’s population and needs have changed,” she said. “In addition, state funding continues to lessen, therefore we are continuing to evaluate ways in which we can improve our services and innovate our program offerings. This includes nutrition, education, training and other services.”

The Golf Classic on Sept. 10 has a new home this year at the Fayetteville Country Club. The four-person scramble will have two flights, with lunch served between flights.

Kickball for the Kids will kick off at 8 a.m. Sept. 28 at Memorial Park in Bentonville. Some teams choose themes replete with costumes as their uniforms. And a spirit award will be presented to a team after the tournament, as voted on by all teams. Two leagues

will play that day — a fun league (three games) and a competitive league (until one team wins all).

The Northwest Arkansas Children’s Shelter is a private, nonprofit organization offering 24-hour residential care for children and teens who are victims of abuse or neglect. Founded in 1993 with five girls as residents, the 48-bed shelter serves some 500 children annually. Residents may stay up to 45 days in a six-month period until returning to their families or being placed in foster care.
