Art Ventures in Fayetteville welcomed guests Aug. 21 for a reception to mark the opening of Outsider Art: The Marsha Scott Collection. The collection is part
of the gallery’s August exhibition Outside In: Contemporary and Outsider Art. Scott spoke to those gathered about her collection and the artists included.
Sharon Killian, Art Ventures board president and artist, describes outsider artists as those who “are typically untrained, have a desire to express themselves and use whatever they have access to.” She said it’s important outside art to be shared because it is “as important as anything else. It comes deep from the soul — whether formal concept or even ‘I must do this.’”
The nonprofit organization will welcome photographer Art Maripol on Thursday for remarks during First Thursday festivities.
Those coming into the gallery for the Outsider show included Laura and Craig Underwood, Gen Broyles, Merleen Harris, Phyllis Johnson, Leslie Scott, Jackson Scott, Olivia Sordo, DeDe and Bo Long, Meridith Boswell, Rita Caver, Dale Oliver and Sharon and Charles Killian.
