OUR BETTERS in Washington spent years trying to get consumers to buy health insurance after passing Obamacare. It was illegal to go without it, or was supposed to be. Maybe there could just be a fine. It could be a “little” illegal.

The problem was that not all Americans wanted, or want, health insurance. Some are young and healthy. Sometimes it’s just too darn expensive. These lists can be long.

Some folks just didn’t want all the bells and whistles of a typical Obamacare plan. Fortunately, the Trump administration has made it easier for consumers to purchase cheaper health insurance plans that don’t cover maternity leave for 60-year-old men. These cheaper plans include things like short-term health insurance, which was typically reserved for people between jobs. Illinois lawmakers tried to clamp down on short-term options, and some of California’s lawmakers are trying to do away with short-term plans altogether, the Wall Street Journal reports.

These politicians are essentially trying to mandate that consumers buy a BMW when they may really only need a little Honda.

Democrats against short-term plans argue they don’t cover as much, so they aren’t really worth it. But why not let consumers make that decision for themselves? Until government mandates those biometric chips be implanted in our brains to give it every medical fact about our bodies, we’re still the best judge of what we’d like in terms of health care. It’s a free country. Or should be.
