Safety not about bags, loitering; it’s about guns

-

The following two paragraphs were in the editorial in the Northwest Arkansas Democrat-Gazette Sunday, Sept. 2: “In the wake of the War Memorial incident, stadium officials have introduced new event rules: a ban on loitering on the stadium concourses, more use of security wands as people enter and a requirement that all bags be clear, making it harder for them to contain undetected devices or weapons.

“Those are positive steps and indicative of the challenge we as a society face to make it possible for people to enjoy themselves free of threats.”

How are earth can you write these words with a straight face? Loitering at a football game is the essence of the fun of going to a game, especially for young people. More use of security wands? Seriously? If we would man up and ban assault weapons and get serious about stemming the spread of gun violence in our society we could use those wands for magic as intended. Maybe use the wand to make guns disappear?

And the biggest insult to women I have ever seen written: All bags be clear? Seriously? You think it is the women who are responsible for all the shootings that take place on a daily basis. Why every woman who got those plastic bags from the Athletic Department didn’t put their tickets into the bags and return them demanding a refund is beyond my comprehension.

It’s the guns, stupid! PATSY FERRITOR Fayetteville
