Rant was disgusting
I am frequently infuriated by this newspaper’s pro-Republican stance, but never more so than by Mike Huckabee’s disgusting op-ed piece last Sunday. This right-wing rant paints all Democrats as deceptive, supporting a “radical agenda [that] threatens to undermine the democratic process and the will of the people.” He blatantly states that “Democrats in Congress are not here to represent the American people” and calls Chuck Schumer’s agenda “the sleazy tactics of the fringe.” This is the pot calling the kettle black.
I beg to disagree in the most vehement terms. First and foremost, Trump was not elected by a majority of voters but by the electoral college. Polls prove most Americans support a woman’s right to choose; sensible immigration laws and regulations; environmental protections opposing industrial pollution and preserving our right to clean water and air; keeping our national parks and public lands out of the hands of giant corporations; protecting the rights of women and LGBTQ minorities; and even same-sex marriage.
It is widely understood that Democrats are the party of the people, the middle class and the disadvantaged— not the GOP, which kowtows to the interests of the wealthy and corporations. And if you need illustrations, see the daily antics of our so-called president, who has been proved to lie to the American people every day about everything from the size of his inauguration audience to immigrant “crime” and his relationships with foreign powers.
Trump and his cronies are endangering our democracy by alienating our allies around the world, undercutting environmental safeguards, denying the catastrophic effects of global warming, inflaming racism and misogyny, and fomenting worldwide trade wars. The Huckabees deny these realities. Their promised “prosperity,” like the profits from their tax cuts, is largely for themselves and their rich friends and corporate supporters, not for you and me.
