- STAFF REPORT

FAYETTEVILLE — The New School chose a longtime educator with a military background to be its next head of school.

Nancy Lang, head of Journeys School of Teton Science Schools in Jackson, Wyo., since 2015, will start her new job July 1, The New School announced this week.

“After an extensive nationwide search, I am thrilled to share that Nancy will be our next head of school,” said Edward Prewitt, chairman of the school’s board, in a news release. “Nancy is a proven leader with a rich history of building meaningful relationships. Her commitment and vision to foster a premier educational experience for students positioned her as our top choice.”

Lang will become The New School’s fourth head of school since it opened in 1971.

She will replace Dennis Chapman, who left in July for a position with a private school in Florida. Susan Groesbeck is serving as interim head of school.

The New School serves more than 400 children in preschool through grade 11.

After Chapman announced his intention to leave last fall, The New School’s board hired a search firm to assist with the process of hiring his permanent replacement. The school’s search committee reviewed 25 resumes and invited several candidates to visit the campus in August and September.

Lang received a bachelor’s degree in mathematics from Cornell University and a master’s degree in math from the University of Massachusetts. She was a commissioned officer in the Air Force before making the move to education, starting as a middle school math teacher at The Miami Valley School in Dayton, Ohio. She later returned to her home of Andover, Mass., where she worked for 22 years at Phillips Academy Andover.
