Bryant injures foot

Two days after signing with the New Orleans Saints, receiver Dez Bryant sustained a potentially season-ending foot injury on the final play of practice Friday, according to multiple reports. Bryant had to be helped off the field, according to NFL Network, which also said that the Saints feared he had torn his Achilles tendon. He was scheduled to undergo magnetic resonance imaging, the network said, to determine the extent of the injury. A torn Achilles would sideline Bryant deep into next year. The NFC South-leading Saints added Bryant to their roster Wednesday to bolster their receiving corps heading into the second half of the season. Their decision to sign Bryant, who spent his first eight seasons with the Dallas Cowboys before being released in April, seemed rooted more in improving their chances to advance far into the playoffs than in helping them get there. The Saints are averaging 34.9 points per game, best in the NFC, behind a diverse offense led by quarterback Drew Brees, running backs Alvin Kamara and Mark Ingram, and receiver Michael Thomas. NCAA sanctions BYU

The BYU men’s basketball program was placed on probation for two years and must vacate 47 victories under sanctions imposed Friday by the NCAA in an improper benefits case involving guard Nick Emery. The NCAA said the player received more than $12,000 in benefits from four boosters, including travel to concerts and an amusement park and the use of a new car. BYU said in a statement that the university, the coaching staff and the athletic department had no knowledge of the infractions and that they disagreed with vacating wins. The NCAA didn’t identify Emery but the university’s statement said the case involved him. Emery withdrew from school last season but has returned to the program. The 6-foot-2 guard was reinstated by the NCAA but is sitting out the first nine games of this season. He served as a captain in 2016-17 and was third on the team with 13.1 points per game and second with 75 three-pointers.

Ex-Hog leads in China Former Arkansas Razorback Gaby Lopez turned 25 on Friday and celebrated with a hole-in-one that helped her to a 6-under-66 and a one-stroke lead over Ariya Jutanugarn after the third round of the Blue Bay LPGA tournament in Hainan Island, China. Lopez will be looking for her first career U.S. LPGA Tour victory in the final round today and will play in the last group with Ariya, the No. 1-ranked golfer. They also played together Friday at Jian Lake Blue Bay Golf Club. Lopez aced the 17th, knocking in a 7 iron from 181 yards. She also had six birdies including three to open the round. She said it was her eighth hole-in-one. Ariya, of Thailand, led by four strokes after the second round but slipped to a 71, which included a bogey on the final hole. Sung Hyun Park shot a 67 and fellow South Korean Sei Young Kim had a 68 to put them both five strokes behind the leader.

Kuchar out front

Matt Kuchar had a 7-under 64 with a fortunate bogey on his card to build a two-shot lead over big-hitting rookie Cameron Champ on Friday in the Mayakoba Golf Classic at Playa Del Carmen, Mexico. Kuchar surged into the mix with five consecutive birdies on the front nine. He was leading by one when his tee shot sailed well to right under bushes near a bed of rocks. He took a penalty drop in a precarious spot, chipped out into the rough and escaped with no more worse than bogey when he holed a 35-foot putt. Champ, going for his second victory this season, played in the morning and had a 62 with a bogey on his final hole. Kuchar was at 14-under 128. Jordan Spieth missed the cut in his final event of the year.

Garcia holds on Sergio Garcia only just held onto his lead as Louis Oosthuizen’s second-round charge took him to within a shot of the Spaniard at the Nedbank Golf Challenge at Sun City, South Africa, on Friday. Garcia’s 1-under 71 moved him to 9 under par overall, but his four-shot first-round advantage disappeared as Oosthuizen made an eagle and five birdies in a 67 at Gary Player Country Club. While Garcia bogeyed three of his last six holes, Oosthuizen came home in 32, with that eagle three and two birdies on his back nine. Rory McIlroy, who is still in the running to win the Race to Dubai and end the season as European No. 1, is tied for 19th after a 1-under 71.

Goydos leads by 1

Paul Goydos birdied the par-5 18th for a 6-under 65 and a one-stroke lead in the PGA Tour Champions’ season-ending Charles Schwab Cup Championship at Phoenix. Tied for the first-round lead with Tim Petrovic after a 63, Goydos had six birdies in the bogey-free round at Phoenix Country Club. Scott McCarron, one of six players left in the season-long Charles Schwab Cup points race for a $1 million annuity, was a stroke back after a 64. He birdied the final two holes. Petrovic was 12 under after a 67.
