Hogs looking to add final pieces to 2019 class

- DUDLEY E. DAWSON

It’s no secret that Arkansas’ off-the-field recruiting efforts have been far more successful than their on-the-field ones this season.

Despite a 2-7 record, firstyear coach Chad Morris and his staff have gathered up a collection of talent that is ranked 12th nationally by Rivals, 17th by 24/7 and 21st by ESPN.

The 23-member class has 10 four-star prospects per Rivals, which is the most a Razorback staff has hauled in since we were wondering whether all heck was going to break loose and we would all be in the dark when the year 2000 rolled around.

So what’s left out there with some six spots remaining to be filled?

It’s clear that Arkansas would love to add some more secondary help as evidenced by the fact that a pair of four-star Louisiana prospects in Devin Bush (6-foot, 190 pounds) of New Orleans Edna Carr and Harvey Jefferson’s Greg Brooks, Jr., (5-10, 180) will be here this weekend on official visits.

The Razorbacks are hoping to flip Brooks from Mississippi State, while they have also been speculated as one of the most likely landing spots for Bush.

“I’m glad we have a 6:30 p.m. kickoff and I think that is going to be great for the recruits to see,” Morris said.

Arkansas would also love to add a third Mansfield (Texas) Legacy standout to the class in safety Jalen Catalon (5-11, 190) to a pair of his teammates and Razorback pledges in defensive linemen Enoch Jackson (6-0, 290) and Taurean Carter (63, 260).

The staff clearly hopes to add at least a pair of junior college impact offensive linemen with Scranton (Pa.) Lackawanna CC’s Chibueze Nwanna (6-7, 315) and Iowa Central College’s Myron Cunningham (6-5, 300) having official visits set to Arkansas in December.

The Razorbacks did add a third high school offensive lineman on Wednesday when Baton Rouge University Lab standout Dylan Rathcke (6-5, 290) pledged to Arkansas.

The Razorbacks could clearly use another linebacker in the class to go along with Fort Bend (Texas) Travis star Zach Zimos (6-4, 220).

Arkansas is in the hunt for Fullerton (Calif.) College linebacker Caleb Johnson, who is apparently down to Texas, Oregon and the Razorbacks.

There’s also a possible spot needed for Clemson graduate transfer quarterback Kelly Bryant, who took an official visit to Arkansas in October.

Bryant has also taken a look at North Carolina, Missouri and Auburn. Dudley Dawson is the recruiting editor for Hawgs Illustrated magazine.
