■ Saturday Night Live cast member Pete Davidson apologized for mocking the appearance of a veteran who lost an eye in Afghanistan, telling Lt. Cmdr. Dan Crenshaw, now a congressman-elect from Texas, that he “deserves all the respect in the world.” During a “Weekend Update” segment on the show’s Nov. 4 episode, Davidson riffed on the midterm elections and presented a photo of Crenshaw wearing an eyepatch. “You may be surprised to hear he’s a congressional candidate from Texas and not a hitman in a porno movie,” the comedian joked. “I’m sorry, I know he lost his eye in war, or whatever.” The joke quickly drew criticism from both sides of the political aisle. On Saturday night, the comedian made another appearance on “Weekend Update,” saying, “I made a joke about Lt. Cmdr. Dan Crenshaw, and on behalf of the show and myself, I apologize.” Crenshaw then joined Davidson on camera. The Navy SEAL, a Republican who won a House seat in Tuesday’s elections, roasted Davidson but then offered a call for unity. “But, seriously, there’s a lot of lessons to learn here,” Crenshaw said. “Not just that the left and right can still agree on some things but also this: Americans can forgive one another. We can remember what brings us together as a country.” He encouraged Americans to connect with veterans by telling them, “Never forget,” instead of just saying, “Thanks for your service.” “When you say ‘never forget’ to a veteran, you are implying that, as an American, you are in it with them,” he said.
