Arkansas State University (4-6) defeated Florida Atlantic (7-3) in double overtime on Friday despite hitting only 1 of its final 15 shots from the floor.

Two free throws by ASU’s Grantham Gillard with 28 seconds left in regulation gave the Red Wolves a 58-56 lead, but a layup 10 second later by the Owls’ Michael Forrest tied the game at 58-58. Florida Atlantic jumped out to a 63-58 lead with 3:11 left in the first overtime after two free throws by Anthony Adger, but the Red Wolves slowly chipped away at the lead at tied the game with 1 second left on two free throws by Ty Cockfield.

Cockfield, who went 14 of 15 from the free-throw line, hit free throws that tied the game at 66-66 with 2:05 left in the second overtime and at 68-68 with 1:32 left. His jumper with 58 seconds remaining fave the Red Wolves a 70-68 lead, which would grow to 73-68 after Salif Boudie hit two free throws with 14 seconds left. After a three-pointer by Forrest cut the lead to 73-71 with 9 seconds left, Cockfield hit two more free throws to provide the final margin.

Neither team shot well from the floor — ASU went 23 of 80 (28.7 percent) and Florida Atlantic went 24 of 83 (28.9 percent). While the Red Wolves were outrebound­ed 61-59, they outscored the Owls 32-26 in the lane and 26-20 off the bench.

Cockfield scored 34 points to lead ASU and Marquis Eaton finished with 15. Adger led Florida Atlantic with 21 points, while Jailyn Ingram had 12 and Forrest 11.
