■ James Morman III, 28, posing as a pastor, was arrested for trying to smuggle contraband into the Scotland County jail in Laurinburg, N.C., when sheriff’s deputies searched his Bible and found strips of drugs hidden inside.

■ Abby Sunderland, 25, of Thousand Oaks, Calif., said her “heart skipped a beat” with news that the 40-foot yacht she abandoned in the Indian Ocean in 2010 during an ill-fated attempt as a 16-year-old to sail around the world solo had been found drifting off Australia’s southern coast.

■ Damir Borden, 13, of Minquadale, Del., who defied his mom by staying up late to watch Netflix, is being credited with saving his family by waking them up when an early morning electrical fire started and destroyed their home.

■ Amber Michelle Parker, 37, an eighth-grade reading teacher in Mexia, Texas, was arrested after investigat­ors accused her of trying to sell a young female relative to men in Morocco for sex, including making a solo trip to the country to broker the deal.

■ Luis Gustavo Moreno Rivera, a former Colombian anti-corruption official who pleaded guilty to U.S. money-laundering conspiracy charges in a bribery scheme, was sentenced to four years in prison, federal prosecutor­s in Miami said.

■ Dave Skena, chief marketing officer for Krispy Kreme, said the company sent the Police Department in Lexington, Ky., dozens of doughnuts after social media posts showed officers jokingly mourning after a doughnut delivery truck caught fire and burned up the pastries aboard.

■ Barbara Davis, 56, of Duncan, S.C., faces a domestic-violence charge after telling deputies that she threw bleach into her 54-year-old boyfriend’s face when he dared her to do it during an argument, splashing it into his eyes and causing him to lose his vision, authoritie­s said.

■ Jeff Wiley, 68, sheriff of Ascension Parish, La., stepped down and retired after six terms in office, keeping a pledge to leave the post just hours before his daughter, Erin Wiley Lanoux, who won election in November, was sworn in to office as a parish court judge.

■ Steve Shepherd, 68, a retired five-time world kickboxing champion in West Palm Beach, Fla., who is back in training for a profession­al match in March, fought back when a mugger demanded his cellphone, hitting his attacker in the head and ribs, and forcing him to flee.
