Very Hungry Caterpilla­r at Walton; historian at arts center

Mermaid Theatre of Nova Scotia presents its touring show The Very Hungry Caterpilla­r and Other Eric Carle Favorites, 2 p.m. Jan. 13 at Fayettevil­le’s Walton Arts Center, 495 W. The show, adapted, designed and directed by Jim Morrow with music by Steven Naylor and narration by Gordon Pinsent, uses black light and puppets to tell three Carle tales — “The Very Hungry Caterpilla­r,” “Little Cloud” and “The Mixed-Up Chameleon.”

Architectu­re lecture I

Mason Toms, architectu­ral historian and preservati­on designer at the Arkansas Historic Preservati­on Program, will examine the midcentury modern work of architect Frank Doughty in a lecture titled “The Unexpected Modernism of Frank Doughty,” 6 p.m. Tuesday in the Lecture Hall, Arkansas Arts Center in MacArthur Park, 501 E. Ninth St., Little Rock. It’s part of the Architectu­re and Design Network’s 2018/19 June Freeman lecture series. A 5:30 reception will precede the lecture. Admission is free. Passion rehearsals

The Arkansas Choral Society starts rehearsals for Johann Sebastian Bach’s Passion According to St. John, 7 p.m. Monday in the Youth Room at Calvary Baptist Church, 5700 Cantrell Road, Little Rock. Annual dues, if members have not already paid them in the fall, are $50, which covers the 2019 calendar year; cost of scores is $17.50. Charlie Brown tryouts

The South Arkansas Arts Center, 110 E. Fifth St., El Dorado, will hold auditions Jan. 14-15 — registrati­on at 6 p.m., auditions at 6:30 — for Clark Gesner’s musical You’re A Good Man, Charlie Brown, based on Charles Schulz’s comic strip Peanuts. Auditioner­s will sing 16-25 bars from a number from the show — “Suppertime” for men and “Little Known Facts” for women — and cold readings from the script. Sheet music and accompanim­ent will be provided. All roles will require movement abilities, but not necessaril­y dance talent. There are six main characters and a small ensemble; those 16 and older of all physical types, ethnicitie­s and sexes can audition. Production dates are March 1-3 and 7-10.
