Not worth its trouble

-

A message to Sarah Capp on her House Bill HB1368 to stop recognizing Daylight Saving Time in Arkansas and to the supporters of such a measure: If this were a national bill, I would not care one way or the other, but since it only pertains to Arkansas, I do not support it.

I lived in Indiana for a year back when that state did not recognize DST. You might think that everything will stay the same if you don’t have to change your clocks, but in fact you will be the ones who have to make adjustments.

Not just for one day—but for a whole season. Imagine you like to watch one of the 10:30 nightly talk shows before you go to bed. All of a sudden after the rest of the country sets its clocks back, this show won’t come on until 11:30. You either have to stay up much later, or miss your show, or record it and watch it at another time. Any of these options will be an adjustment—and not just for one day. Because anything on the national clocks will change while you will not.

When the TV announcer says your program is on at 8 Eastern, 7 Central, you will need to remember and make the mental adjustments that you follow Central during Standard Time and then Eastern during DST.

If you think adjusting for one hour two times a year is bothersome, just wait until you have to spend weeks getting used to the adjustment only to have to do it again when the rest of the country changes back. MICHAEL VINING Benton
