Quartets in concert

Two Arkansas Symphony Orchestra ensembles — the Quapaw Quartet (Meredith Maddox Hicks and Charlotte Crosmer, violins; Ryan Mooney, viola; and David Gerstein, cello) and Rockefelle­r Quartet (Trisha McGovern Freeney and Katherine Williamson, violins; Katherine Reynolds, viola; and Ethan Young, cello) demonstrat­e “The Art of the String Quartet,” 7 p.m. Tuesday in the Great Hall of the Clinton Presidenti­al Center, 1200 President Clinton Ave., Little Rock. The Quapaw Quartet will play the String Quartet No. 1, “Kreutzer Sonata,” by Leos Janacek and the String Quartet in D major by Giacomo Puccini; the Rockefelle­r four will play the String Quartet No. 12 in B-flat major, K.172, by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and the String Quartet by Giuseppe Verdi. Literary laureate

Central Arkansas author and literary advocate Phillip H. McMath has chosen Caitlin Hamilton Summie’s short story collection To Lay to Rest Our Ghosts as the winner of the fourth annual Phillip H. McMath Post Publicatio­n book award.

McMath founded the award in 2016 to promote recently published books. Summie’s was one of seven finalists chosen by students in the Arkansas Writers MFA Workshop, housed at the University of Central Arkansas.

On Tuesday she will receive the award as part of UCA’s Arkatext Literary Festival, Monday-March 1 and will give a public reading at 6 p.m. at UCA Downtown, 1105 Oak St., Conway.

NEA grants

The National Endowment for the Arts has extended seven fiscal year 2019 grants totaling $130,000 to Arkansas individual­s and organizati­ons in three funding categories: Art Works and Challenge America, both supporting projects by nonprofit organizati­ons, and Creative Writing Fellowship­s.
