■ Adrienne Jones, 64, was elected 139-0 by Democrats and Republican­s as a compromise candidate to become the first black woman to serve as speaker of Maryland’s House of Delegates, a position that had been held by only white men until her election.

■ Janet Mills, the governor of Maine, signed legislatio­n making Maine the first state to impose a state-wide ban on single-use food and drink containers made of polystyren­e foam, despite objections from industry and business groups that said the result will be higher costs for small businesses.

■ Lisa Farbstein, a Transporta­tion Security Administra­tion spokesman, said it wasn’t a violation for a passenger to carry moose droppings in his carry-on bag and he was allowed to board a plane in Juneau, Alaska, after telling security agents that he likes to hand out the poop for “politician­s and their bleep policies.”

■ Brian Dunlap, police chief of Hobbs, N.M., said a 15-year-old boy is recovering after being wounded three times by a 17-year-old boy who shot at the first youth’s car because someone threw a banana at his vehicle just hours after prom.

■ Khaled Khayat, 51, was convicted in Sydney, Australia, of plotting to blow up an Etihad Airways flight to the United Arab Emirates using a bomb hidden in a meat grinder that was abandoned because it was in a bag too heavy to be taken aboard as carry-on luggage.

■ Tina Obermeier, 59, a hospital pharmacist from Webster Grove, Mo., pleaded guilty to stealing drugs, including hydrocodon­e and methadone, by improperly filling prescripti­ons and then hiding the drugs under her clothing, prosecutor­s said.

■ Thomas Wells, 33, of Pittsburgh, accused of flushing his grandparen­ts’ ashes down a toilet after his mother kicked him out of her home, was charged with two counts of abuse of a corpse and a criminal mischief charge, police said.

■ Evelyn Sanchez, 33, traveling by bus from Los Angeles to New York in 2018 when she was stopped at a Kansas City, Mo., bus station carrying more than 5 pounds of fentanyl in her suitcase, has pleaded guilty to possessing drugs with the intent to distribute.

■ Randy Fandal, police chief of Slidell, La., said thieves disabled security cameras and manipulate­d a lighting system overnight so they could steal 124 tires and rims worth more than $100,000 from 31 vehicles at a car dealership.
