BELLA VISTA — Judith Anne Mellicker, 93, of Bella Vista, Ark., passed away Saturday, Aug. 10, 2019, at Highlands Health and Rehab in Bella Vista. She was born on July 2, 1926, in Detroit, Mich., to Clair Alexander Stuchell and Irene Olson Stuchell.

Judy graduated from Grosse Pointe High School and Western College for Women in Oxford, Ohio. Throughout her life she had lived in Detroit, Mich., Omaha, Neb., Florissant, Mo., Iowa City, Iowa, and finally, in Bella Vista, Ark. She lived a long and fruitful life, enjoyed travel and visits to her farm in the Missouri Ozarks with friends and family.

Judy was an active member of her church, the United Lutheran Church in Bella Vista. She was a member of the Stephen Ministry and helped minister to those who were in need.

Judy was preceded in death by her husband, George W. Mellicker, of 54 years and by her son-in-law, Richard J. Street.

Survivors include a daughter, Martha A. Street of Troy, Mo.; two sons, George W. Mellicker III of Owasso, Okla., and Mark S. Mellicker of Kent, Ill.; five grandchild­ren; and four great-grandchild­ren.

A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 24, at Concordia Retirement Center, 1 Concordia Drive, Bella Vista, Ark.

YBELLA VISTA — Leonard Montgomery Scharf Jr., age 87, of Bella Vista died Aug. 16. He served in the U.S. Navy. He was an attorney for many years. YFAYETTEVI­LLE — Edward Paul Jones, age 81, of Fayettevil­le, died Tuesday, Aug. 6, 2019. He was born April 16, 1938, in Pampa, Texas, the son of Paul Cecil and Thelma Jean Ward Jones.

Ed was a retired Circuit Judge for the State of Arkansas. He played football and basketball for the University of Arkansas. He was in the United States Air Force. After serving in the Air Force, Ed returned to Law School at the University of Arkansas to receive his law degree. Ed practiced law in El Dorado, Ark., for multiple years.

Ed is survived by two daughters, Angie Schuldt of Fayettevil­le and Amanda Furman of Raleigh Durham, N. C.; a son, Matthew Jones of Fayettevil­le; and one sister, Retta Harnar of Lawrence, Kan. He is also survived by his grandchild­ren: Tori Schuldt of Fayettevil­le, Madison Jones of Fayettevil­le, Lauren Schuldt of Fayettevil­le and Jude Furman of Raleigh Durham.

Cremation arrangemen­ts were by Moore’s Chapel.

A memorial service will be held in El Dorado, Ark. at a later date.

YFAYETTEVI­LLE — Jimmy Lee (Jim) Turpin, age 82, passed away Thursday, Aug. 15, 2019, in Fayettevil­le, Ark. He was born Jan. 26, 1937, in Marianna, Ark., the son of Carlie Andrew and Sallie Elizabeth (Bates) Turpin.

He was preceded in death by his parents and by his brother, Leon Turpin.

Jim received his B.S and M.S. degrees in Chemical Engineerin­g from the University of Arkansas in 1960 and 1961, respective­ly, and his Ph.D. from the University of Oklahoma in 1966. He married Joyce in 1963, and upon his graduation, they made their home in Fayettevil­le where Jim taught Chemical Engineerin­g at the University of Arkansas until his retirement in 2009. During his distinguis­hed career, he was the recipient of multiple teaching awards including the UA Alumni Associatio­n Outstandin­g Teaching Award in 1982, the Catalyst National Award for Excellence in Teaching in 1991, the Carnegie Foundation Arkansas Professor of the Year in 1996, and the College of Engineerin­g

Outstandin­g Service to Students Award in 2003. He was also a founding member of the UA Teaching Academy. More importantl­y, he made it his goal to personally know each of his students, and in doing so encouraged, mentored and profoundly impacted hundreds if not thousands of young lives.

Jim was a longtime member of University Baptist Church. He was a committed Christian throughout his life, and he never hesitated to share God’s truth with the thousands of students who came through his classes during 40-plus years of teaching. After his retirement, Jim never stopped teaching as he poured years of wisdom and love into his grandchild­ren and great-grandchild­ren.

He is survived by his wife, Joyce Turpin; two sons, Tracy Turpin and wife Amy of San Antonio, Texas, and Terry Turpin and wife Kirsty of Fayettevil­le; five grandchild­ren; and two great-grandchild­ren.

Visitation will be held 5 p.m.–7 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 20, 2019, at Moore’s Chapel in Fayettevil­le. Funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday at University Baptist Church with burial to follow at Fairview Memorial Gardens under the direction of Moore’s Chapel.

YSPRINGDAL­E — Judy J. King, 75, of Springdale passed away Wednesday, Aug. 14, 2019, at her home. She was born Sept. 24, 1943, in Springdale, Ark., to Herbert and Ruth Renfro Eicher.

Judy was a Registered Nurse graduating from St. Vincent Nursing School in 1966. She was the co-owner of Tanglewood Drug Store in Little Rock. She was a Teaching Leader at Bible Study Fellowship in North Little Rock. She was a loving and loved prayer warrior, wife, mother, grandmothe­r and friend.

She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother, Glenn David Eicher and two sisters, Helen Reuter and Ruthann White.

Survivors include her husband of 55 years, David King, Sr of the home; one son, David King, Jr. and wife Lisa of Springdale; one daughter, Tracee Harrison and husband Kenny of Puerto Rico; one brother, Nick Eicher and wife Paula of Hot Springs Village, Arkansas; one sister, Debbie Addison and husband Raymond of Springdale; five grandchild­ren, Austin, Zane and Lila Kate King, Lindsy Harrison Barlow and Brady Harrison.

Funeral service will be Tuesday, Aug. 20, 2019, at 2 p.m. at Sisco Funeral Chapel of Springdale. Private burial will follow in Bluff Cemetery. Visitation will be Tuesday from 1 to 2 p.m. at the funeral home.

SPRINGDALE — Fred Phillips, 92, of Springdale passed away Sunday, Aug. 11, 2019, at Washington Regional Medical Center in Fayettevil­le. He was born April 14, 1927, in Dexter, Ga., to James Oliver and Mattie Davis Phillips.

Fred was a World War II veteran and served in the United States Navy from age 17 to 21. He graduated from the University of Georgia with a bachelor’s degree in food technology. He worked in hotel and restaurant management and was the owner of the Airport Cafe in Springdale for 14 years. He loved to fish, was an avid sports fan, and enjoyed his favorite team, the Bulldogs from his Alma Mater, the University of Georgia.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Major Phillips, Mavis Phillips Bellflower, Lamar “Son” Phillips, James Clarence”Jiggs” Phillips, Henry Earl “Pete” Phillips , Geneva “Gema” Phillips Porter and Jerry Malcom”Smokey” Phillips.

Survivors include his wife, Lillie Marie Mumphrey Phillips of the home; one son, Clifton (Clif) Phillips of the home; one daughter, Patricia “Patty” Phillips Bacon (and husband Darrel) of Louisiana, one brother, Charles E.”Jabo” Phillips of Florida; three grandchild­ren, Diana, Danielle and Jean’ (and wife Amber); three great-grandchild­ren, Christian, Gracie and Jameson; his favorite niece, Denise Phillips Strickland (and husband Danny) of Georgia, and other nieces and nephews.
