Legacy Village: welcome to your new neighborhood

- BY KAREN RICE NWA DEMOCRAT-GAZETTE

At first glance, Legacy Village Assisted Living looks like any other attractive neighborhood—a gathering of six beautifully designed and maintained singlestory homes in quiet surroundings. But the Village is much more than a peaceful place to live, it in fact represents a unique approach to elder care.

Every house is home to 10 elder residents, each with a studio apartment ranging in size from 275-325 square feet, with private bathrooms and kitchenettes. The apartments surround a hearth room with fireplace, a large open kitchen, family style dining room and outdoor space. Imagine watching hummingbirds on the patio as you have your coffee and eggs - just like home. This arrangement helps to balance elders’ need for privacy with the need for community.

“Our goal is to create the environment of a real home, with a lifestyle that is anything but institutional,” Katrena Pianalto, Legacy Village Administrator, points out. “It’s the kind of neighborhood in which many of our elders grew up—where they could sit on their front porch or visit with their neighbors. The need for some assistance with daily living activities shouldn’t have to change that.”

The neighborhood is shared with Legacy Village Garden Homes and Circle of Life Hospice Home. The Legacy Village concept and mindset is helping older adults maintain their dignity and autonomy, in their own environment, while prolonging the time in their life they can live independently. This gives family members peace of mind about moving a loved one from their own home to a care setting. Residents provide their own furniture and decor. Those who have spent down personal assets can receive assistance applying for public funding.

Legacy Village offers three tiers of assisted living care, based on a personalized needs assessment. Rates include room and board, laundry, housekeeping, meals and snacks, social activities, medication management and more.

The objective is to help elders achieve a sense of well-being and independence while providing high-quality, personalized care. The results have been profound: elders are happier and healthier with more prolonged, independent lives.

“At Legacy Village Assisted Living, we take pride in our ability to give older adults the care needed, not just clinically, but mentally and emotionally, to sustain the quality of life they would have had in their home,” Katrena said.
