Carpenter snaps out of slump as Cards sweep Rockies, 11-4

ST. LOUIS — Matt Carpenter broke out of his slump with a homer and three hits, Dexter Fowler drove in three runs and the St. Louis Cardinals cruised to an 11-4 victory over the Colorado Rockies after a long rain delay Sunday.

St. Louis, which has won seven of eight and 13 of 16, swept the four-game series by a combined score of 31-12.

MIAMI — Starlin Castro’s tworun double in the sixth inning capped a comeback by the Miami Marlins, who rallied against Aaron Nola to beat the Philadelph­ia Phillies.

NEW YORK — Josh Donaldson hit two more home runs against the Mets, Dallas Keuchel pitched his best game of the season and the Atlanta Braves won their eighth in a row, holding off New York.

PIRATES 9, REDS 8

PITTSBURGH — Trevor Bauer had another rocky outing for Cincinnati, allowing eight runs in three innings as the Pittsburgh Pirates beat the Reds to sweep a three-game series.

DIAMONDBAC­KS 5, BREWERS 2

MILWAUKEE — Robbie Ray returned from the injured list and pitched five scoreless innings, Eduardo Escobar and Christian Walker each homered, and the Arizona Diamondbac­ks beat the Milwaukee Brewers to avoid a series sweep.

NATIONALS 7, CUBS 5

CHICAGO — Anthony Rendon homered and had four hits, including an RBI single in the 11th inning, and the Washington Nationals beat the Chicago Cubs for their fifth straight victory.

CHICAGO — Reynaldo López pitched five no-hit scoreless innings before leaving with dehydratio­n and flu-like symptoms, and the Chicago White Sox went on to beat the Texas Rangers

Aaron Bummer replaced López to start the sixth. The first batter he faced, Shin-Soo Choo, lined a single to left on a 1-0 pitch for the Rangers’ only hit.

CLEVELAND — Ryan O’Hearn led off the 10th inning with his second homer of the game, sending the Kansas City Royals to a wild 9-8 win Sunday over the Cleveland Indians, whose playoff hopes were rocked by losing third baseman Jose Ramírez to a broken right hand.

HOUSTON — Jose Altuve homered to cap a seven-run eighth inning, Framber Valdez grinded through six gritty innings and the Houston Astros beat the Los Angeles Angels.

MINNEAPOLI­S — C.J. Cron and Jonathan Schoop homered, Martín Pérez pitched six solid innings and the Minnesota Twins beat the last-place Detroit Tigers to win two of three in the weekend series.

BALTIMORE — Anthony Santander went 5 for 5 with a homer, Renato Núñez drove in three runs and the Baltimore Orioles beat the Tampa Bay Rays for a split of the four-game series.

SEATTLE — Marco Gonzales (14-10) pitched three-hit ball over seven innings to get his career-best 14th win, Dylan Moore hit a solo homer and Seattle beat Toronto.

OAKLAND, Calif. — Evan Longoria homered early and hit a goahead, two-run single in the seventh inning as San Francisco rallied late again to beat Oakland for a twogame sweep.

LOS ANGELES — DJ LeMahieu, Aaron Judge and Mike Ford homered, Domingo Germán outdueled Clayton Kershaw for his major league-leading 17th win, and New York defeated Los Angeles.
