ROGERS — Plans for new baseball and softball fields at two high schools got the approval of the city’s Planning Commission on Tuesday.

The commission approved plans for ball fields at Rogers High School and Heritage High School, as well as a gym at Heritage.

“The key thing is we want something on site,” said Charles Lee, assistant superintendent for general administration at Rogers Public Schools.

Students play baseball and softball at Veterans Park in Rogers because the schools lack fields, Lee said. That means students have to drive or take a bus to the ball fields. Rogers Public Schools will continue to use Veterans Park for its junior varsity teams.

Plans show an 11,930-square-foot baseball and softball complex off of South 24th Street at Rogers High School and more than 20,700 square feet for the Rogers Heritage baseball and

softball complex, including space for new buildings off of South Sixth Street.

Plans for the auxiliary gym, which Lee said will be used for off-season volleyball and basketball, show a more than 31,000-square-foot gym on more than 2 acres off of South Fifth Street.

The ball fields will cost a total of about $16 million combined, while the gym will cost about $7 million, Lee said. The district plans to begin dirt work for the new ball fields in October or November with a projected completion date of September 2020. The gym is expected to be completed in November 2020.

The school district is also planning a new gym at Rogers High School, he said.

The commission unanimously approved the plans.
