WEDNESDAY’S MLB ROUNDUP

-

AMERICAN LEAGUE BLUE JAYS 8, RED SOX 0

TORONTO — Trent Thornton and three others combined on a two-hitter, Teoscar Hernández and Rowdy Tellez homered, and the Toronto Blue Jays beat the Boston Red Sox.

The slumping Red Sox have lost five straight. They had just four baserunners, and none advanced past second base.

Thornton (5-9) followed an opener with five hitless innings, walking one and striking out seven in his first career relief appearance. He is the second pitcher in Blue Jays history to pitch five hitless innings of relief. Right-hander Roy Lee Jackson did it against Minnesota on Sept. 28, 1982.

YANKEES-TIGERS POSTPONED

DETROIT — CC Sabathia’s next trip to the mound will have to wait a bit.

The New York Yankees and Detroit Tigers were rained out Wednesday night, and the game was rescheduled as part of a doubleheader today. Sabathia, who has dealt with right knee problems this season, had his start pushed back to the second game of the twinbill.

ROYALS 8, WHITE SOX 6

CHICAGO — Jorge Soler hit a pair of two-run homers among his career high-matching four hits, leading the Kansas City Royals to an 8-6 victory over the Chicago White Sox on Wednesday night.

Soler has 43 homers this season, two behind American League leader Mike Trout of the Los Angeles Angels.

It was the fifth multi-homer game of Soler’s career and third this season. He also has five more homers than the Royals’ previous team record of 38, by Mike Moustakas in 2017.

INTERLEAGUE NATIONALS 6, TWINS 2

MINNEAPOLIS — Ryan Zimmerman homered and drove in three runs in support of Stephen Strasburg, who gave the Washington Nationals six strong innings to beat the Minnesota Twins for just their third win in the last nine games.

Juan Soto and Zimmerman hit RBI singles in the first inning against Martín Pérez, who fell further behind in the third when Howie Kendrick doubled in Soto with two outs and Zimmerman followed with his two-run smash into the left field seats for a 5-0 lead.

NATIONAL LEAGUE METS 9, DIAMONDBACKS 0

NEW YORK — Todd Frazier and Jeff McNeil each homered twice, helping the surging New York Mets stun Diamondbacks ace Robbie Ray and beat Arizona.

The Mets (75-70) have won the first three games of the pivotal four-game series to move past the Diamondbacks (7571) in the race for the second NL wild card. New York entered Wednesday three games behind the Chicago Cubs, who played later Wednesday at San Diego.

Arizona has lost four straight since going 11-1 to rush back into the crowded NL playoff picture.

Steven Matz (10-8) tossed six scoreless innings for the Mets, who jumped on Ray (12-8) for five runs before chasing him with two outs in the first. Wilson Ramos (groundout) and J.D. Davis (single) had RBIs before Frazier and Brandon Nimmo homered on consecutive pitches.

McNeil hit a solo homer in the second, and Frazier hit his 20th homer of the season, a solo shot, in the third. McNeil then joined Frazier in the 20-homer club with a two-run drive in the sixth.

BREWERS 7, MARLINS 5

MIAMI — Mike Moustakas homered twice, including a tiebreaking, two-run shot in the ninth inning as the Milwaukee Brewers defeated the Miami Marlins in their first game following star outfielder Christian Yelich’s season-ending injury.

The Brewers won their sixth in a row. They began the day one game behind Chicago for the second NL wild-card spot.

Yelich, the reigning National League MVP, broke his right kneecap in Tuesday night’s game when he fouled a ball off himself. He returned to Milwaukee earlier Wednesday for additional tests.

Trent Grisham, one of the outfielders expected to get additional playing time in Yelich’s absence, led off the game with a home run.

It was 5-all when Moustakas drove a fastball from Miami reliever Jose Urena (4-9) into the upper deck in right-center field for his 33rd homer. Urena retired the first two hitters before he walked Yasmani Grandal.

Moustakas returned to the starting lineup on his 31st birthday, playing for the first time since Sept. 2 after recovering from a sprained left wrist.
