For those who have a passion for helping others and a desire to make the world around them a better place, love science and are interested in learning about how the human body works, and want to see more doctors serving people in Arkansas, the New York Institute of Technology College of Osteopathic Medicine-Arkansas could be the perfect place to pursue a career in medicine.
Located on the Jonesboro campus of Arkansas State University, NYITCOM-Arkansas is the state’s first osteopathic medical school and is committed to giving people in Arkansas and the Mississippi Delta better access to health care and health education. Arkansas is facing a significant shortage when it comes to doctors practicing in the state. Additionally, Arkansas ranks poorly among all states with its high number of diseases such as cancer, diabetes and high blood pressure; and incidences of early death.
NYITCOM-Arkansas was established in 2016 as an additional location to NYITCOM in Long Island, New York. The mission of NYITCOM-Arkansas is to address both the physician shortage in this region and to help improve health outcomes among the people living in Arkansas and the Delta through health-education programs in communities throughout the state and region.
Medical students at NYITCOMArkansas are trained for a lifetime of learning and practice. The college is committed to preparing osteopathic doctors for careers in health care, including those in the inner city and rural communities. NYITCOMArkansas students learn about how social factors — such as income and geography — impact people’s health, and the students study how health care policies shape the way medicine is practiced in our state and country. Being an excellent physician is the ground-floor expectation at NYITCOM. The school’s leadership believes it is a privilege to be a physician, and with great privilege comes great responsibility. NYITCOMArkansas student doctors are taught to maintain competence and compassion, as well as the ability to better serve the community and society through research, teaching and servant leadership.
NYITCOM-Arkansas prepares medical students to be fully equipped to enter the medical profession and become fully licensed doctors who can practice in all areas of medicine and surgery. NYITCOM-Arkansas will graduate its first class of doctors in May 2020.
Being on the Arkansas State University campus, NYITCOM-Arkansas students have “dual citizenship” and can access all ASU facilities as well as attend ASU sporting events – Wolves Up! They can live on campus in medical student designated housing and purchase meal plans in the cafeteria and food court. As part of NYITCOM’s commitment to health education, the college requires its students to perform community service. Student doctors often speak at elementary schools about the importance of vaccines, why people need to regularly wash their hands and other relevant health topics. The medical students also volunteer at free health screenings and clinics or serve at food banks.
NYITCOM-Arkansas is more than just a medical school: It’s a place where aspiring young doctors learn how to make a difference through medicine. If that mission resonates, visit www.nyit.edu/arkansas to learn more about the medical program.
