NFL Gordon placed on IR

The New England Patriots have placed receiver Josh Gordon on injured reserve with knee and ankle injuries. The move was posted on the NFL’s transaction wire late Wednesday afternoon. Gordon suffered the injuries during New England’s win over the Giants in Week 6 and sat out Monday night’s victory over the Jets. He did not participate when the Patriots returned to the practice field on Wednesday. Gordon’s absence will mean the Patriots will now be leaning even more on veteran Mohamed Sanu, acquired in a trade with Atlanta on Tuesday, to provide some stability to an offense that leads the league in scoring at nearly 32 points a game. The Patriots traded a second-round draft pick in 2020 to the Falcons. The 30-year-old Sanu has 33 receptions for 313 yards, but only one touchdown so far this season. Gordon was among New England’s leading receivers this season. In six games he has 20 catches for 287 yards and a touchdown.

Cardinals add two RBs

The Arizona Cardinals have signed Alfred Morris and Zach Zenner to add depth at the banged-up running back position. The 5-foot-10, 222-pound Morris has played in 104 career games over seven years and run for 5,931 yards and 34 touchdowns. Morris ran for more than 1,000 yards in each of his first three seasons but the 30-yearold’s production has declined in recent years. He ran for 428 yards in 12 games last season for San Francisco. The 5-11, 228-pound Zenner was recently released by the New Orleans Saints after appearing in one game. He has 686 career rushing yards over five seasons. Arizona’s Chase Edmonds had a career-high 126 yards rushing in Sunday’s victory over the New York Giants. But the Cardinals’ other running backs — David Johnson (ankle) and D.J. Foster (hamstring) — are dealing with injuries.

NBA Beverley fined $25,000

Los Angeles Clippers guard Patrick Beverley (Arkansas Razorbacks) has been fined $25,000 by the

NBA for throwing a basketball into the stands at the end of a 112-102 victory over the Lakers on Tuesday night at Staples Center. The league announced the decision Wednesday evening. Beverley brought the ball up court in the final seconds and stopped along the right sideline as he waited for time to expire. As the buzzer sounded, he flung the ball high into the air with his left hand before he pivoted left and headed to the team’s bench. Beverley was ejected from a game and later fined $25,000 last season after he forcefully tossed a bounce pass toward a Mavericks fan sitting courtside in Dallas.
