No. 3 Michigan State 76, No. 12 Seton Hall 73

NEWARK, N.J. — Freshman Malik Hall hit a layup with 26 seconds to play and scored all 17 of his points in the second half as No. 3 Michigan State overcame a late five-point deficit and beat No. 12 Seton Hall in a wildly exciting contest worthy of March Madness.

Cassius Winston added two free throws with 3.4 seconds to play to push the lead to three points, and the Spartans (2-1) played tough defense on drives in the lane by Sandro Mamukelash­vili and Myles Powell in the waning seconds. The Pirates eventually saw a desperatio­n half-court heave by Powell bounce off the top of the rim as the final buzzer sounded.

Winston scored 17 of his 21 points in the second half, playing his second game in less than a week after the death of his brother, Zachary.

Powell was remarkable, scoring 37 points in a game most felt he would miss because of an ankle injury. Myles Cale added 12 for the Pirates (2-1) in the Gavitt Tipoff game at the Prudential Center.

No. 15 Florida 66, Towson 60

GAINESVILL­E, Fla. — Freshman Scottie Lewis scored 15 points in his first start, and No. 15 Florida escaped with a victory over Towson.

Graduate transfer Kerry Blackshear Jr. had 13 points and 13 rebounds in his third game with his new team as Florida (2-1) bounced back from a dispiritin­g home loss to Florida State. Andrew Nembhard had 11 points and nine assists for the Gators.

No. 19 Arizona 87, San Jose State 39

TUCSON, Ariz. — Zeke Nnaji scored 26 points, made all eight of his shots and grabbed 11 rebounds, helping No. 19 Arizona trounce San Jose State.

Arizona (3-0) dominated a third straight opponent to open the season, shutting down the Spartans (1-2) defensivel­y from the opening tip.

The Wildcats held San Jose State to 23% shooting, including 2 for 18 from 3-point range, and used a big run to build a 21-point halftime lead.

TOP 25 WOMEN No. 16 Michigan State 72, No. 15 Notre Dame 69

NOTRE DAME, Ind. — Nia Clouden scored a career-high 28 points and No. 16 Michigan State held off No. 15 Notre Dame’s late rally for a victory.

Clouden made four 3-pointers and was 9 of 21 from the field. Taryn McCutheon added 12 points for Michigan State (3-0).

Sam Brunelle and Katlyn Gilbert scored 19 points apiece to lead Notre Dame (2-2), which has lost two straight games.

The Irish rallied from a 13-point deficit late in the third quarter, using a 15-5 run to pull to 58-57 with 5:30 to play. Victoria Gaines made a layup and Tory Ozment added a 3 and to stretch the Spartans’ lead to 63-57 with about three minutes remaining in the game.

Brunelle’s 3-pointer got the Irish within 7069 with 10 seconds left, but McCutcheon made a pair of free throws to seal it for the Spartans.

No. 2 Baylor 112, Houston Baptist 42

WACO, Texas — Te’a Cooper scored 23 points, Queen Egbo had a career-high 21 points starting in place of injured preseason AP All-America post Lauren Cox, and No. 2 Baylor beat Houston Baptist.

The defending national champion Lady Bears (3-0) won their 32nd consecutiv­e game. They have won their three games this season by an average margin of 71 points.

No. 9 Louisville 76, Central Michigan 63

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Jazmine Jones scored 25 points and Dana Evans had 24 — both career highs — to lead No. 9 Louisville to a victory over Central Michigan.

The Cardinals (3-0) shot just 37.3%, but Jones, five days after going 6-for-6 in a win over Murray State, made 10 of 13 baskets against the Chippewas (0-2). She added nine rebounds.

No. 11 UCLA 86, Long Beach State 51

LOS ANGELES — Michaela Onyenwere had 27 points and six rebounds to help UCLA beat Long Beach State.

Onyenwere scored 11 of the first 13 points of the game as UCLA opened with a 20-0 run. The Bruins led 52-26 at the break after scoring 26 points in each quarter. Onyenwere paced the Bruins with 22 points, on 9-of-12 shooting, in the half and she finished with only five missed shots.

No. 14 N.C. State 81, Lamar 40

RALEIGH, N.C. — Kayla Jones and Grace Hunter scored 15 points each, Elissa Cunane added 14 points and 13 rebounds, and the No. 14 N.C. State women beat Lamar.

Jada Boyd’s jumper with 4:31 left gave the Wolfpack (3-0) their largest lead of the game at 81-32 and the Cardinals (1-2) closed the game on an 8-0 run.

No. 22 Texas 84, UTSA 53

AUSTIN, Texas — Charli Collier had career highs with 28 points and 12 rebounds to lead No. 22 Texas to a victory over UTSA.

The Longhorns (1-1) are 10-0 against UTSA (2-1) and have won all nine home openers with coach Karen Aston.

Collier was 11 of 17 from the floor. Joyner Holmes added 17 points, 10 rebounds and a career-best five assists for the Longhorns (1-1). Lashann Higgs finished with 11 points.

Mikayla Woods scored 15 points and Adryana Quezada added 10 for UTSA (2-1).
