FAYETTEVIL­LE — Ruth Powell Rawls Lawson, 95, passed from this life to the arms of her heavenly father, Nov. 18, 2019, in Fayettevil­le, Ark. She was born Oct. 31, 1924, in Crossett, Ark., to James Alfred Powell, Sr. and Annie Chloris Stevenson Powell.

Ruth spent most of her younger years in Crossett, Ark., surrounded by family and friends. This is where she began her 37-year work history with Sherwin Williams Paint company, working in the management of stores and moving to corporate executive management of the company both in Dallas, Texas, and Cleveland, Ohio.

At one point, she directed over 250 interior designers in the stores. Her work ethic was exemplary. She was a lifelong member of the first United Methodist Church, first in Crossett where she shared her beautiful soprano voice for the choir. Later, at St. James United Methodist Church in Little Rock, and finally at first United Methodist in Springdale, Ark.

She enjoyed her retirement years by dining, playing bridge and other card games with wonderful friends at Butterfiel­d Trail Village in Fayettevil­le, Ark. She loved her neighbors, her friends and her lovely family.

She was predecease­d by her parents, husbands Billy G. Rawls and Jimmy Lawson, sister Maxine Perritt and brother James Powell Jr., both of Crossett, Ark.

Ruth is survived by daughter Glenda Newman and husband Dwain of Fayettevil­le, Ark.; daughter Barbara Pugh of Foley, Ala.; stepson Jeff Newman of Wesley, Ark.; stepdaught­er Kristy Newman of Grandview, Texas; grandchild­ren Bob Newell III of Lake Village, Ark., Amy Newell of Glenwood Springs, Colo., Brent Hanby of Springdale, Ark., and Blake Hanby and wife Beth of Rogers, Ark.; step-granddaugh­ter Shelby Newman of Little Rock, Ark.; step-grandson Jay Newman of Fayettevil­le, Ark.; great-grandchild­ren Payton Hanby of Little Rock, Ark., Chase Hanby of Fayettevil­le, Ark., Jake Hanby of Rogers, Ark., and Hallie Hanby of Fayettevil­le, Ark.; and several beloved nieces and nephews.

Honorary pallbearer­s will be Brent Hanby, Blake Hanby, Bob Newell, III, Jake Hanby, Chase Hanby, Jeff Newman and Jay Newman.

Services will be held Monday, Nov. 25, at 2 p.m. at the First United Methodist cChurch chapel of Springdale, Ark., with pastors Andrew Thompson and Jen Ryerson officiatin­g. Harold “Monty” Thurman, formerly of Carroll County was born April 10, 1941, in Fort Smith, Ark., to Leo and Elizabeth Thurman. Harold passed away Nov. 20, 2019, in Fayettevil­le at age 78.

Harold graduated from Navy boot camp between his junior and senior year of high school. He graduated from Eureka Springs High School in 1959. He served on the USS Pandemas as radio operator from 1961-1963. Upon discharge from the Navy, he married Susanne Hunsley and they resided in Memphis, Tenn., where he worked at the White Stone Company.

Eventually he started the Ozark Stone Company. All three of his children were born in Memphis, and in August 1973 they returned to Eureka Springs. He and Susanne opened the Tasty Freeze, the first of many Carroll County businesses. He was the owner of four motels, two restaurant­s, apartments and a partner with his brothers in the real estate and insurance business.

In 1976, he moved his family to Berryville where he and Susanne raised them. Harold served on the Berryville City Council from 1985-1990. He was a longtime member of First Baptist Church of Berryville and a charter member of the Eureka Springs Kiwanis. Harold’s greatest love was his family. He was married to Susanne for 53 years. He took pride in his three children, Julia, Kristine and Greg and he loved his seven grandchild­ren.

On Aug. 6, 1966, Harold was united in marriage to Susanne (Hunsley) Thurman who survives him.

He is also survived by daughters Julia Williams and husband Dwight of Fayettevil­le and Kristine Crownover and husband Brian of Cave Springs; son Greg Thurman and wife Ashley of Berryville; grandchild­ren Elizabeth Williams, Allison Williams, Megan Crownover, James Daniel Crownover, Abby Thurman, Mia Thurman and Paige Thurman; sister Harriett Turner and husband Roy of Little Rock; brother Bobby Dale Thurman and wife Carla of Eureka Springs; sisterin-law Sheila Thurman of Rogers; brother-in-law Tom Stockslage of Plano, Texas; numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews.

Harold was preceded in death by his parents, Leo and Elizabeth Thurman, and brother Don Thurman.

Visitation will be Saturday, Nov. 23, 2019, 10 am. to 11 a.m., at First Assembly of God in Eureka Springs, Ark. Funeral service will follow at 11 a.m. with Pastor Billy McCall officiatin­g. Interment

HINDSVILLE — Harlen Curtis Johnson, 86, of Hindsville, died Nov. 19, 2019, at Huntsville. Graveside services will be 11 a.m., Saturday, Nov. 23, 2019, at Cherry Creek Cemetery, Wesley, with Glen Faulkner officiatin­g. Pallbearer­s will be family. Services are entrusted to Brashears Funeral Home and Crematory of Huntsville.

LOWELL — Evelyn “Carol” Sutherland, 79, of Lowell, Ark., passed away in her home with family by her side on Nov. 20, 2019, after a hardfought battle with cancer. In hospice care for four weeks prior to her death, Carol died peacefully in her sleep.

She leaves daughter Sherrie Dixon and husband Frank and grandchild­ren Nicholas and Natalie; daughter Diane Caron and husband Mike and granddaugh­ters Shaleh, Shyanne and Sheridan; daughter Karen Aspenson and husband Erik and grandchild­ren Dain, Emma, Finn and Beau; son Dain Sutherland and wife Erika and grandchild­ren Joseph and Hannah; and William Sutherland, former husband and good friend of Carol.

Carol was born in Van, Mo., on Nov. 7, 1940, to the late Parker and Opal (Boos) Watson.

She was preceded in death by two older brothers and leaves behind a younger sister, Janice Sharp of Bolivar, Mo.

She graduated from Bolivar High School in 1958. Carol was a loving wife and homemaker for the biggest part of her life, working tirelessly to make most of her children’s clothes as well as her own. Renowned for her pies, she was a fantastic cook. She also crocheted countless afghans for newborn babies. She became a Christian in early adulthood and was a lifelong church member, raising her children to be strong followers of Christ as well. Most recently, Carol was a member of Elmdale Baptist Church in Springdale, Ark.

In her later years, she was a caretaker for her mother for a period of time. She also was available to care for her grandchild­ren for extended periods, much to everyone’s delight. She loved to play games and never “let” anyone win, so her children and grandchild­ren have a strong, competitiv­e spirit.

Her children wish to thank her sister, Aunt Janice, for moving in with her and being a wonderful caretaker and companion during her battle with cancer.

A memorial service will be held at Crossway Baptist Church in Springfiel­d, Mo., on Saturday, Nov. 23, at 1 p.m. Online condolence­s may be left at www.siscofuner­al.com

PARIS — Dixie Sue McClain, 68, of Paris, passed away Nov. 21, 2019. She was born Oct. 13, 1951. Survivors include her son, Charles McClain; two granddaugh­ters; four brothers, and her sister. The family will have a private service at a later date. Cremation arrangemen­ts under the direction of Roller Funeral Home Paris.

ROGERS — William Frank Arnold, 95, passed away on Thursday, Nov 21, 2019, in Rogers, Ark. He was born in the Ouachita Co, Ark., to John Frank Arnold and Katie Smith Arnold, both of the Tate’s Bluff community.

Frank was the youngest of four and preceded in death by his wife of 68 years, Frances Hindman Arnold, his parents, sisters Anna Mae Arnold Feight (Hugh) and Kathrine Arnold Cassell (Roy); and brother James M Arnold (Mary Dale).

He is survived by daughter Frankie Arnold Novak and son-in-law Bryan Novak of Rogers, Ark.

Frank served in the Navy during WWII aboard the SS Robert F. Broussard and the SS Fort McHenry. He was honorably discharged Feb. 4, 1946.

He studied at Southern Arkansas University and completed his undergradu­ate work at Henderson State University. He completed his graduate work and fellowship at the University of Arkansas in Fayettevil­le.

Frank enjoyed a dual career path. He started as a profession­al educator teaching mathematic­s at Paul Pewitt Schools in Texas, Fairview High School, Camden, Ark., and Lakeside High School, Hot Springs, Ark.. He also held positions as an analytical chemist for Alcoa Corporatio­n in Bauxite, Ark., and Pittsburg, Pa. The Alcoa position also included an assignment in Costa Rica setting up a new research laboratory for the company.

He continued his chemist career with National Rejectors Inc. in Hot Springs, Ark., and Reynolds Metals Company in Jones Mill, Ark. He retired from Reynolds after 21 years of service.

Frank’s favorite pastimes were managing his Tree Farm in South Arkansas, cooking rum cakes and spending time with friends and family. He also loved having coffee and talking about the latest events with his friends in Chidester, Hot Springs, and at Primrose Retirement in Rogers.

Visitation­s will be Tuesday, Nov. 26, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Proctor Funeral Home in Camden, Ark., and Wednesday, Nov. 27, from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. at Red Hill United Methodist Church in Chidester, with the funeral service starting at 11:30 a.m. at Red Hill United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Red Hill Cemetery in Chidester, Ark.
