A united state

Arkansas will get through this

- ASA HUTCHINSON AND STEUART WALTON Asa Hutchinson is governor of Arkansas; Steuart Walton is chairman of the Arkansas Economic Recovery Task Force.

There’s a lot that makes Arkan- sas unlike any place in the world. From the Ozarks to the Plains to the Delta, our Natural State is arguably unmatched. The shared history that has cultivated our music and art is a testament to the geography and diversity across our entire state. Our inherent entrepreneurial spirit has given birth to global companies and a myriad of distinctive small businesses.

We are a state united no matter what is thrown our way, even during these truly extraordinary times. In a period of less than four weeks, our systems, our institutions, our businesses and all of our daily lives have changed — and for most, the changes have been quite dramatic and disruptive.

Although the covid-19 crisis impacts all Americans in similar ways, each state has its own particular challenges. Arkansans will face this challenge as we always have, with compassion, resiliency, and an unbeatable entrepreneurial spirit. We are, even now, building upon this legacy as we navigate through this together, with leadership from all levels of the public and private sectors.

Arkansans have taken extraordinary steps to come together and support our neighbors and small businesses during this time: Most local and regional banks have worked with their small business customers to provide loan relief. Hospitals and medical institutions are working together across the state to share resources and information. Food and supply chain-related businesses have worked tirelessly to ensure groceries and other products are available to everyone. Small businesses are innovating to best serve customers despite the loss of nearly all walk-in business. Educators have quickly pivoted to online instruction to ensure the school year ends well. Entrepreneurs are launching new businesses and innovations in the midst of the crisis.

Governmental institutions have pivoted and adapted to continue serving constituents through digital resources and in other ways. Nonprofits have provided emergency assistance and resources despite facing financial uncertainty themselves. Philanthropic organizations have provided resources to help nonprofits bridge this difficult period. Neighbors are helping neighbors in every neighborhood across our state.

We are sure most Arkansans have their own stories exemplifying the resilience of our state and our people. We will get through this together and because of each other. The recent announcement about the development of the Arkansas Economic Recovery Task Force will assemble a group of dedicated and accomplished Arkansans to lay out a plan that positions Arkansas for economic recovery and future success. The innovative and entrepreneurial spirit that Arkansans are known for will no doubt lead our nation’s economic recovery efforts.

Today, we have our own moment in history, and we can only be worthy of this moment if we work together. Whether you’re a sixth-generation Arkansan or you’ve lived here for six weeks, you’re about to witness a display of the many qualities that make Arkansas a great place to live. Arkansas is strong. Arkansas is compassionate. Arkansas is resourceful. Arkansas is entrepreneurial. These attributes, enhanced by our collective commitment to our communities, will help our state come back stronger than ever.

For now, let’s keep taking care of one another as we move Arkansas forward, and show the nation a path to reopening and recovery.
