■ On the first day of her testimony Monday at Britain’s High Court in London, Amber Heard accused ex-husband Johnny Depp of abusing her both physically and verbally while bingeing on alcohol and drugs, and she said she feared for her life at various times during their tempestuous relationship. Heard also denied accusations that she was a heavy drug user and drinker as well as a controlling and abusive person. The court is hearing Depp’s libel suit against The Sun newspaper over an April 2018 article that labeled him a “wife beater” over accusations that he abused Heard, whom he met in 2009 and divorced in 2017. Chronicling a series of incidents during their deteriorating relationship, that were said to include Depp throwing a magnum of champagne and a phone at her, Heard said that any action she took in response was purely in self-defense. “When I felt my life was threatened, I tried to defend myself, and that started to happen years into the relationship, years into the violence,” she told the court. “Before that, I didn’t even try to defend myself; I just checked out.” Depp, 57, is suing The Sun’s publisher, News Group Newspapers, and the paper’s executive editor, Dan Wootton, over the article. The Hollywood star, who denies abusing Heard, was at the court to hear his ex-wife’s testimony. In written testimony released as she took to the witness box, Heard, 34, said that at various times during their relationship, she endured “punching, slapping, kicking, head-butting and choking.”

■ An Israeli court convicted top model Bar Refaeli on Monday on four tax offense counts, capping a prolonged tax evasion case against her and her family. Refaeli entered the Tel Aviv courthouse accompanied by her father, Raffi; her mother, Zipi; and lawyers. Refaeli, 35, and her mother confessed to evading paying taxes on income nearing $10 million. According to a plea agreement they signed last month, Refaeli is to serve nine months of community service while her mother will be sent to prison for 16 months. The two are also ordered to pay a $1.5 million fine on top of millions of dollars in back taxes owed to the state. The case, which was built around the celebrity model’s worldwide income and the family’s attempts to downplay her ties to Israel, damaged her public image as an informal ambassador for the country.
