■ David Whitely, a Black British radio host who goes by the name Sideman, quit the BBC over the corporatio­n’s decision to include a racial slur when reporting on an attack on a Black man, saying “with no apology [from the BBC] I just don’t feel comfortabl­e being aligned with the organizati­on.”

■ Joe Arpaio, 88, the former sheriff of Maricopa County, Ariz., known for leading immigratio­n crackdowns and building a political career around the tough treatment of jail inmates, narrowly lost a race to win back his old job, his second failed comeback bid four years after getting voted out of office.

■ Chris Ramirez, a lieutenant with the Los Angeles police, said investigat­ors have not identified a suspect in a shooting in which two people were injured and one woman was killed during a party attended by hundreds of people at a Los Angeles mansion.

■ Jonathan Dunlap, 30, of Pine Mountain, Ga., has been sentenced to serve more than 12 years in federal prison, after he was recorded on jail phone calls making threats against a federal agent while awaiting trial on drug charges, according to federal prosecutor­s.

■ Bashir Hangi, a spokesman for Uganda Wildlife Authority, said two baby gorillas have been discovered in Bwindi Impenetrab­le National Park, which he called “a sign of relief” after Rafiki, one of the park’s most popular gorillas, was killed by poachers.

■ Morgan Johansson, the justice minister of Sweden, promised “more police and harsher sentences” after the death of a 12-yearold girl during a drive-by shooting that authoritie­s said was likely the result of gangs fighting over territory in suburban neighborho­ods.

■ Deyton Fisher, 22, of Mexico, Mo., was arrested and is facing second-degree murder and other charges in the death of Chance Davis, who was killed during a break-in at his home in Quincy, Ill., according to authoritie­s.
