Profiles in cowardice

-

I am a retiree with a part-time job, primarily because the 2008 debacle was not good for my portfolio. My job is in retail. I enjoy my job and love the people with whom I work. However, I can’t say that I love all customers. There are far too many “clueless” people that think covid-19 is a myth, a hoax, a Democratic ploy to “steal the election” and/or not applicable to them.

I wear masks all the hours I work; they are hot, even stinky at times, but I wear them to protect the people that I work with, customers, and to a lesser degree me. I cannot begin to tell you the number of people who don’t think that breathing out of their nose could spread a virus (masks over their mouth only), come in without a mask (because it infringes on their freedom), or say their child is too young to catch the virus and therefore can’t spread it. If looks could kill, my co-workers and I would be dead and buried. Some refuse to shop with us, and while that does nothing for our business, it makes me feel better when they leave the store. All we are trying to do is protect ourselves and them so that we might all shop another day.

Now about the current man in the White House and the recent election. I used to say I was neither Democrat nor Republican. Scratch that, I am a Democrat. After the election, Republican friends told me to just let it play out. When does it “play out”? Talk about coddling a grown, albeit infantile, man. He lost! Gabriel Sterling said it best when he spoke in Georgia. It’s time for those elected to leadership positions to be leaders. John F. Kennedy wrote a book years ago called “Profiles in Courage.” Maybe these “leaders” should read it. “Profiles in cowardice” doesn’t read as well and won’t stand the test of time in a complimentary way. At what point will these people concede?

Nero fiddled while Rome burned. Trump golfed while the U.S. Constitution burned.
