ROGERS — Zora Jean Lyle,

104, passed away Aug. 25, 2020. Born in Vallejo, Calif., the family moved to Stockton, Calif., in the early 1920s where she resided throughout her school years and into early adulthood.

She attended the University of Pacific and belonged to Delta Gamma. She married Duane Copley Lyle in 1938, and in 1949 the Lyle family moved to Palo Alto on the San Francisco peninsula.

Zora was very active socially throughout her lifetime belonging to many social organizations, She enjoyed parties, dancing, golf and travel. She worked for many years as a hostess for Sunset Magazine conducting tours of their campus in Menlo Park, Calif., before retiring and moving to Santa Rosa, Calif.. Zora left her native California in 2007 relocating in Arkansas to be closer to family.

Although she always remained a Californian at heart, she was amazed at all Northwest Arkansas had to offer. One of the deciding factors in her move was the future opening of Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art. Shortly after her move, she began volunteering at the museum at its temporary location in downtown Bentonville.

She was always very interested in home decorating and fashion. Her husband often referred to her as his “exterior decorator.” She met the pandemic head on by immediately having six chairs reupholstered and rearranging the furniture in her home at Legacy Village. She loved entertaining and enjoyed having friends over for Irish coffee or cocktails. An avid domino and bridge player, she often played bridge several times a week.

One of her favorite Saturday or Sunday pastimes was having friends in for an afternoon of bridge or dominos and light supper. Her many friendships, some from childhood, were most important in her life.

She was very independent and when she was no longer able to drive she ventured out on her electric handicap scooter. She loved the beautiful landscapes on her scooter trips to Crystal Bridges and would go shopping at least weekly at her local Neighborhood Market or Dollar General. She daily took an early evening ride around her neighborhood weather permitting. Her last evening ride was just two weeks before her death.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years. She is survived by her two daughters and grandson.

Her family extends heartfelt thanks to Zora’s longtime housekeeper, Skye Zumbro, and her more recent caregiver, Christie Hoerler, for their dedicated care and friendship that allowed her to remain living independently in her own home until her death.
