■ Mark Mitchell , the director of the Louisiana State University School of Veterinary Medicine in Baton Rouge, along with staff members and students of the school, released a barred owl back into the wild after mending its broken wing and nursing it back to health for two months.

■ Jen Mullaney Jones , a Mississippi woman, said she was “absolutely gutted” by the theft of an urn carrying her father’s ashes that, along with her purse, was stolen from her vehicle outside the Veterans of Foreign Wars hall in Gulfport where she was celebrating her wedding.

■ Lewis Reed , the president of the St. Louis Board of Aldermen, said an additional 45 inmates have been transferred out of a downtown St. Louis jail after a disruption stemming from concerns about unsafe conditions amid the coronavirus pandemic.

■ Lakeyria Doughty , 26, a Baltimore dirt bike rider known as “Wheelie Queen,” who appeared in an HBO movie about the city’s riding scene, is facing multiple charges including first- and second-degree murder in the stabbing of her partner, according to police.

■ Lauren Cox , a city spokeswoman for Philadelphia, said there were no major issues with a New Year’s celebration in which scores of costumed Mummers took to the streets, disregarding official cancellation of the annual event and a ban on large gatherings because of the coronavirus pandemic.

■ Mirtha Ramos , the police chief in DeKalb County, Ga., called it a “sad day” in a statement announcing the death of Sgt. Daniel Mobley, a 22-year veteran of the department, who was hit by a vehicle in downtown Atlanta as he was helping out at the scene of another accident.

■ Leidy Hernandez , 24, a Honduran woman, gave birth on the Mexican side of the Ignacio Zaragoza border bridge linking Matamoros, Mexico, to Brownsville, Texas, as she was trying to reach the U.S. side of the bridge, according to Mexican immigration authorities.

■ Rebecca Grossman , 57, of Hidden Hills, Calif., pleaded innocent to multiple homicide and hit-andrun charges in the deaths of two boys who were hit by a vehicle while crossing the street in a marked crosswalk with their parents, according to prosecutors.

■ Garon Mosby ,a spokesman for the St. Louis Fire Department, said that a firefighter was in serious but stable condition after being injured while responding to an apartment fire that sent two other people to the hospital.
