Vehicle registration bill gets House OK

- — RACHEL HERZOG

The House on Thursday passed legislation extending the time period after which new residents are required to register their vehicles from 30 days to 60 days.

The sponsor, Rep. Frances Cavenaugh, R-Walnut Ridge, said the change wouldn’t impact the tax rate, though it may impact when the revenue is collected.

In response to a question from Rep. Mark Lowery, R-Maumelle, Cavenaugh said liability insurance is required when the vehicle is purchased, so the bill wouldn’t delay when people get liability insurance.

Cavenaugh is the chief financial officer of Cavenaugh Auto Group, a car dealership.

House Bill 1028 passed the House 88-0. House Majority Leader Austin McCollum, R-Bentonville, voted present. The bill now goes to the Senate.
