Bentonville’s bond plan doesn’t include new tax
“Read my lips: No new taxes.”
You may remember a president’s statement made years ago that had to be retracted rather quickly. Well, not this time.
In 2003, because of forward-thinking leadership, residents of Bentonville voted to approve a 1-cent sales tax. This tax has allowed Bentonville to almost “keep up” with the phenomenal growth we have experienced.
On April 13, we have the privilege of keeping our taxes low by voting to extend the 1-cent sales tax that we have been paying since 2003. It makes true the statement: No new taxes.
Because we are a community in the fastgrowth lane, it is incredible that the city is not asking more from us. We all know how hard 2020 was. It’s still a difficult time, but we are thriving. Our city is getting it done. Because of responsible, hard-working, faithful city government, city Leaders, community workers, volunteers and citizens, we have navigated the toughest year we’ve seen. The city is still financially strong enough to not ask for any increase in your taxes or mine.
By passing this 1-cent extension, the tax collected will be authorized to repay bonds and provide funds for ongoing capital improvements needed today to prepare for tomorrow. Capital projects include funds for street/traffic/drainage improvements, parks and recreations projects, library expansion and public safety improvements. These items are important and beneficial to every one of us. They safeguard the life we love and allow us to enjoy our Bentonville as well as pass along that enjoyment to future generations.
By utilizing the extension of 1-cent sales tax, residents are making a difference for citizens here now and those who have yet to find out how committed we are to keeping Bentonville, as the mayor describes, “the best place to live, work and play.”
Our Chamber President, Graham Cobb, recently said, “This is not a new tax. This is not a new expense for our citizens. It’s right for our community. It’s right for our economy. It’s right for Bentonville.”
It’s a wonderful thing to live in a beautiful city that makes everyone seem like someone. No matter how much growth we have, this small-town value remains.
Please show your support by voting “yes” on all nine items so we can extend this existing 1-cent investment on April 13 or vote early beginning April 6.
