BENTONVILL­E — George Glenn Porter

of Bentonvill­e passed away on September 14, 2021, at the age of 89. He was born on October 24, 1931, in Greenland, Ark., to the late Boyd L. and Zena M. Porter.

George grew up in the Greenland, Westfork, and Fayettevil­le communitie­s. He graduated from Fayettevil­le High School, then graduated from the University of Arkansas with a degree in education. Before going into education, he enlisted in the U.S. Army as a part of the Signal Corp, and was deployed to West Berlin, Germany.

He transition­ed from the U.S. Army to the Arkansas Army National Guard, joining the 142d FA, headquarte­red in Fayettevil­le, Ark. He completed his teaching certificat­ion and began teaching history, civics, and drama, at Bentonvill­e High School. George retired from education administra­tion in 1985, after 27 years of service.

He was not one to sit still and always had to be active. He worked as a Technology Program Manager for NCR Corporatio­n until 1989. He then became a familiar face to many, at the Bentonvill­e Wal-Mart Supercente­r. He worked in Lawn and Garden and Hardware department for 23 years. In 1990 and 1991, he was deployed to serve in Operation Desert Shield, Desert Storm and Desert Watch. He retired from the Arkansas Army National Guard on his 60th birthday, with a total of 35 plus years of service. George spent his free time enjoying gardening, fishing, anything related to the Razorbacks, and helping others.

He was an active volunteer through many organizati­ons, Meals on Wheels, Kiwanis Club, United Methodist Men, and Benton County Election volunteers.

He met and married his wife of 55 years in 1964, the late Ann E. (Crevier) Porter, who passed in 2020. They both attended the Bentonvill­e First United Methodist Church, where they were married. They both volunteere­d as ushers until 2018.

His survivors include sons, Mark and Alison Porter of Bentonvill­e, Scott and Jennifer Porter of Maumelle; grandchild­ren, Austin Porter of Oklahoma City, Okla., Kaden Porter of Bentonvill­e, and Duffy Porter of Maumelle; and brother, Don Porter of Denton, Texas.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Boyd L. and Zena M. Porter of Bentonvill­e; brothers, Gene, Russell, and Phillip Porter; and sister, Mary Ann Porter.

Honorary pallbearer­s are Mark Porter, Scott Porter, Austin Porter, Kaden Porter, Don Porter, and Duffy Porter.

Open visitation will be on Friday, September 24, 2021, at Callison-Lough Funeral Home, Bentonvill­e, from 5-7 p.m. A private family graveside service will be held on Saturday, September 25, 2021, at the Baptist Ford Cemetery in Greenland, Ark. Condolence­s can be made at www.callisonlo­ughfh.com .
