Jerry Neel’s: A BBQ legacy in Fort Smith

- BY KAREN RICE NORTHWEST ARKANSAS DEMOCRAT-GAZETTE

Back in 1977, the first Star Wars movie came out in theaters. Elvis Presley died at the age of 42. The first Apple II computers went on sale. And Jerry Neel opened Jerry Neel’s Bar-BQue in Fort Smith. The restaurant opening was the fruition of Jerry’s mission to provide mouthwatering barbecue to locals in a clean, friendly environment. And 45 years later, the legacy continues with his son Jake, who runs the business just like his pops did.

“My dad started the business in 1977,” Jake began. “My dad came from Little Rock to open the Norge (now Whirlpool) cafeteria. One of his jobs was to cater all the picnics for the company. People loved his barbecue so much they started saying ‘you should open your own place!’” Jerry Sr. took their advice and it was an instant hit.

Jake has been with the restaurant for the entire forty-four years. Today, he and his wife, Marisu, run the business and their reputation just keeps growing. They attribute part of their success to the outstanding staff they have been able to attract over the years. “We have some really good managers like Jennifer,” Jake said. “God has blessed us. We have always had just really great crew members.”

But what has really madeJerry Neel’s Bar-B-Que & Catering so successful is the mouthwatering menu items. Some of the regulars’ favorites include the twice baked potatoes, sliced brisket, and pork ribs. All of their meats are smoked on a daily basis to bring out the distinct hickory flavor, and their house sauces are made from scratch. “Everything is really good. The pork ribs, chicken, sausage,” Jake said. “We recently added catfish. It comes with a warning that it’ll burn your mouth because we make fresh every time.”

And you don’t have to take Jake’s word for it, here’s what some satisfied customers have had to say on Facebook about the iconic Ft. Smith eatery:

“Been going here since 70’s. Great food and service. Love the half chicken with fried okra, corn on cob, beans and twice baked potato. Catfish and shrimp are awesome too. Deserts awesome also.” - Eddy

“Jake did a great job serving the family our Easter dinner. The service was fast and friendly. The food was great. We will definitely be back!” - Angie

“Y’all, this is small place w BIG flavor! Ribs are great, just enough sweetness to make you want more. 10 out of 10!!” - Marquina

Catering is also an important part of the Jerry Neel’s Bar-B-Que legend in Fort Smith. With spring celebrations coming up, it’s a perfect solution for feeding hungry guests. “We provide last-minute catering services, and we love hosting large celebrations such as wedding parties and family outings,” Jake said.

One of those catering requests came all the way from the White House. President Trump paid for Jerry Neel’s to feed troops who were temporarily stationed at a nearby army base. “The army sent troops out from New York to Fort Chaffee,” Jake explained. “So, when they flew back to New York, they loaded up two 747’s with about 500 troops on each plane. We provided meals for all of them to enjoy during their trip back.”

If you haven’t been by to experience the amazing menu items at Jerry Neel’s, you are missing some of the best eating in town. They offer a sit-down restaurant, drive thru take-out and catering options. “We are proud to be a part of Fort Smith’s history,” Jake said. “And we hope to see you come through our doors soon!”
