Zaxby’s: an all-American success story

- BY KAREN RICE

Zaxby’s Chicken Fingers and Buffalo Wings was “hatched” when a couple of good friends had one great idea. Zach McLeroy and Tony Townley were hanging out, playing basketball and tossing around an idea. They didn’t know much about the restaurant business. But they knew this much: the chicken they could find where they live in Statesboro, Georgia was okay, but not really great. Plus, none of the local chicken places were fun or had any personality. So, as the story goes, they dreamed up Zaxby’s right there on the basketball court. The rest, as they say, is chicken history.

“The very first Zaxby’s opened in 1990 in Statesboro,” Grayson McElveen, Zaxby’s District Manager noted.

“Founder and CEO Zach McLeroy built the concept around indescribably good chicken and the unrivaled flavor of Zax sauce. He built the culture around a desire to enrich the lives of others. Today there are more than 900 locations, nine distinct sauces, countless Z-words, and one signature sandwich.”

There’s nothing like real, classic southern comfort food: fried chicken and Texas toast and cole slaw. And if you’ve ever been to Zaxby’s Chicken Fingers & Buffalo Wings, you know that they have it down.

“Freshly made to order, traditional but never boring and with real ingredients,” is how Grayson put it. “Consistently good, quality food and a relaxed and fun atmosphere make Zaxby’s what it is in the fast-casual restaurant scene.”

Their Signature Sandwich and Signature Club Sandwich are specials that include crispy crinkle fries and a drink.

“The fillet is double hand-breaded with our extra crispy breading and dressed with Zax sauce and a pickle,” Grayson said. “Not to be outdone, the Meal Dealz selection includes some of our most popular items – Wings & Things, Big Zax Snak, and the Great 8 Boneless meal are just some of the great choices on the menu.”

Those Famous Fingerz & Wings and the sauces have built quite a following of loyal fans over the years. You can choose between boneless or traditional wings, and delicious Chicken Fingerz. Each menu item is customizable with a wide variety of sauces to make your meal your own - from “Buffalo” to “Wimpy” all the way to “Insane.”

Zaxby’s selection of salads, or Zalads, warrant a mention, too. “We offer a variety of salads to please any crowd,” Grayson said. “Crisp greens, topped with freshly sliced Roma tomatoes, cheddar cheeses, grilled or fried chicken and a variety of dressings. We wanted to make sure there was a great choice for healthconscious folks.”

And if your gathering is looking for something you can share to kick off your Zaxby’s experience, check out their mouthwatering Zappetizers.

“Crowd pleasers and shareables are a great way to start your Zaxby’s trip,” Grayson said. “Fried White Cheddar Bites are a big hit – batter-fried white cheddar cheese pieces with marinara dipping sauce, cheesy goodness? Yes, please!”

And if you’re looking for a familyfriendly establishment that will please the kids, Zaxby’s has that covered, too! “We call it Zax Kidz®,” Grayson said. “Our Kidz menu includes Kiddie Cheese sandwich, Kidz Nibblerz and a Kiddie Finger meal.”

The wide variety of menu items along with their fun and welcoming atmosphere set Zaxby’s apart from the competition. “We are on a mission,” said Grayson. “To consistently create encore experiences that enrich lives one person at a time.”
