FORT SMITH — With deep sadness, we mourn the loss of Philip “Phil” Patrick Christensen,
who passed away at the age of 54 on February 11, 2023, following a courageous nine- month battle with cancer. Phil was a beloved husband, father, son, brother, and friend, who will be deeply missed by all who knew him. His passing leaves a void in the lives of those he touched, but his memory will live on forever.
Phil was born on September 16, 1968, in Corona, California. He was a devoted husband to his wife of 34 years, Kim Christensen, and a loving father to his son, Josh (Emily) Christensen, and daughter, Jordan (Zachary) Hall. He was affectionately known as “Papa” to his grandchildren, Rhett, Harper, and Beau. He was the son of Kennard Christensen of Booneville, Ark., Phil (Laura) Rhodes of Strafford, Missouri, and Diane (Larry) Shores of Booneville, Ark.. Phil was also a proud big brother to Misty (Shane) McBride, Jeremy (Christina) Christensen, Jenny (Stephan) Durham, Travis ( Lauren) Christensen, Kendall (Steve) Sanderson, Jonathan Christensen, and Samuel Christensen. His passing will be deeply felt by his family and friends.
Phil along with his wife and children were the perfect embodiment of a loving family. They raised their family in Hackett, Ark. Phil was often spotted down at his dock, rocking in his chair and watching the water. He also enjoyed spending time in his workshop crafting beautiful woodwork pieces. But his favorite pastime was playing on the floor with his grandchildren, watching them grow and develop.
Phil was an avid adventurer who loved to explore the great outdoors. He cherished his time spent camping, boating, and capturing life’s memorable moments through his photography. Philip was also a thrill-seeker, and enjoyed the challenge of off-roading in his jeep. These hobbies brought him much joy and allowed him to create lasting memories with his loved ones.
Chief Christensen was a distinguished and highly decorated firefighter, who left a lasting impact on the world of firefighting and leadership. Throughout his career, he was honored with numerous awards and recognition, including the Firefighter of the Year award in 2000, the Company Officer of the Year award in 2012, and the IAFF President’s Plaque in 2013. He was also a proud graduate of the Leadership Fort Smith program in 2015. Chief Christensen’s bravery and service to the community were recognized with several medals, including a Fire Department Achievement Medal, an Order of St. Florian Medal, two Meritorious Service Medals, five Commendation Medals, and a Distinguished Service Medal. He was the most decorated firefighter in the history of the Fort Smith Fire Department, and his achievements were a testament to his unwavering commitment to his profession and to those he served.
Chief Christensen’s legacy will live on for many years to come, and he will always be remembered as a true hero, leader, and mentor. He was a visionary and an advocate for firefighters and their families, leaving a lasting impact on the community he served. His dedication to personal and professional growth was an inspiration to all who knew him, and he will be deeply missed by all. Chief Christensen’s leadership was unmatched, and he served with distinction as the IAFF President from 2007 to 2014. He was a visionary and a true advocate for firefighters and their families, leaving a lasting impact on the community he served. As the Citizen’s Fire Academy Coordinator, he shared his extensive knowledge and expertise, inspiring and educating hundreds of citizens.
He was a proud member of both the International Association of Fire Chiefs and the Arkansas Association of Fire Chiefs, serving as a role model and mentor to many. One of Chief Christensen’s greatest passions was his service to others, including his time working with Camp Sunshine, a summer camp for children with significant burn injuries. He devoted countless hours to this noble cause, serving as a counselor and making a profound difference in the lives of many children. His selflessness, compassion, and generosity were an inspiration to all who knew him, and his legacy will live on for many years to come.
