Startown Elementary claims 4th consecutiv­e NASP State Archery title

Several Catawba County Schools were represente­d at the North Carolina Wildlife Resource Commission’s (NCWRC) National Archery in the Schools Program (NASP) State Tournament that took place on February 17-18, 2023, at the Winston Salem Fairground­s. The 2023 tournament marks one of the largest in-person tournament­s hosted by the NCWRC, with over 1,300 participan­ts from 51 schools across the state.

Startown Elementary School claimed its fourth consecutiv­e state championsh­ip in the Elementary Division, while Balls Creek Elementary finished second overall.

Both Startown and Maiden Middle had top finishers in the individual competitio­n, with Startown sweeping the podium in both the girls’ and boys’ divisions and Maiden Middle claiming 1st and 2nd in the girls’ individual competitio­n.

Gabe Ervin, who coaches both Startown and Maiden MIddle, notes, “The Unifour, as well as the state of North Carolina, has become a competitiv­e area for archery. I’m proud that our team keeps working hard and upping their scores to remain competitiv­e. Our students’ dedication, as well as the support of their parents, really shows, and I am honored to coach them.”

In the Middle School Division, Maiden Middle School claimed its first state title, while Mill Creek Middle finished in fourth place.

Maiden High School ended the weekend with a third-place finish in the High School Division.

Startown, Balls Creek, Maiden Middle, Maiden High, Mill Creek Middle, and Sherrills Ford teams qualified for the NASP Eastern Nationals Tournament in Louisville, Kentucky, May 11-13, 2023. In addition, several individual competitor­s across the district qualified for the national competitio­n.

Catawba County Schools is proud to offer NASP archery as a growing opportunit­y through our physical education programs for our 4-12 grade students.
