Tar Heels freshman receiver Chris Culliver (3) garnered his first collegiate touchdown against Campbell on a 41-yard reception in the fourth quarter on Saturday, Nov. 4.

CHAPEL HILL, N.C.— North Carolina scored 52 unanswered points and crushed Campbell, 59-7, on a sunny Saturday afternoon at Kenan Stadium, dominating on both sides of the ball to break free of a two-game funk.

After the Fighting Camels tied things at 7-7 midway through the first quarter, UNC pitched a shutout the rest of the way and allowed just 287 total yards in the game.

Meanwhile, the Tar Heels piled up 594 offensive yards and a season-high 59 points, their best scoring output in 22 games (since beating Appalachian State in a wild, 63-61, game in Boone, N.C., early last season).

Running back Omarion Hampton ran at will for 144 yards, and Drake Maye tied his season high with four touchdown passes in an efficient, 16-for-23 performance for 244 yards. Maye posted a passer rating of 216.1 before heading to the bench late in the third quarter with the outcome of the game well in-hand.

Tez Walker caught two passes, both for TDs, and now has six scoring grabs in five games this season.

Walker and Hampton both scored a pair of first-half touchdowns. Carolina scored TDs on three consecutive second-quarter drives to take control of the game after a somewhat sluggish offensive start. The score was 28-7 at the break.

“Our guys did what you’re supposed to do,” head coach Mack Brown said in his postgame press conference.“They took the team that they were better than and dominated them.”

The Tar Heels snapped a two-game losing streak and improved to 7-2 in their final non-conference game of the regular season. The Fighting Camels dropped to 4-5.

It was the first-ever meeting between the two in-state schools.

Carolina limited Campbell to just 102 rushing yards while pounding out 276 on the ground, including 10 carries for 64 yards by British Brooks and an electrifying 61-yard scoring scamper by Conner Harrell in the fourth quarter.

The Tar Heel offense averaged 9.7 yards per play on the day, including 15.1 yards per completion and 8.4 per carry.
