Miller named Assistant Manager of the Year by NCCCMA

City of Hickory Deputy City Manager and Chief Financial Officer Rodney Miller received the Assistant Manager of the Year Award from the North Carolina City and County Management Associatio­n (NCCCMA). The prestigiou­s award was announced and presented to Miller on Feb. 1 during the NCCCMA Winter Seminar held in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.

Miller serves as the City of Hickory’s deputy administra­tor and plays a vital role in budget and policy developmen­t as well as strategic planning of city government services. With his accounting expertise and extensive executive experience, Miller guides the city’s overall financial management, oversees nine city department­s responsibl­e for providing fundamenta­l city services, and manages multimilli­on-dollar projects in support of the Hickory City Council’s strategic directives.

A lifelong resident of Hickory, Miller has spent 28 years serving the community as a local government executive in the areas of government­al accounting and finance. He previously served as the City of Hickory’s Assistant Finance Director for six years before going to work for Catawba County as Chief Financial Officer (CFO) in 2001. After serving in that position at the County for 14 years, Miller returned to the City of Hickory to become Assistant City Manager and CFO in June 2015. He was appointed to his current role of Deputy City Manager for the City of Hickory in 2020.

“Rodney’s financial expertise has been especially valuable during the implementa­tion of Hickory’s bond program and revitaliza­tion efforts over the past decade,” said Hickory City Manager Warren Wood. “He is an integral member of the city management team and a key driver of Hickory’s economic growth and ongoing progress toward a brighter future.”

Miller holds a bachelor’s degree in accounting from N.C. State University and has been a Certified Local Government Finance Officer in the State of North Carolina since 2006. In 2022, Miller became a Credential­ed Manager through the Internatio­nal City/County Management Associatio­n (ICMA).

In addition to his civic role, Miller serves as the Chief Finance Officer for the Trivium Corporate Center Board, managing a 378-acre Class A business park in collaborat­ion with Catawba County government. He served on the board of the North Carolina Government Finance Officers Associatio­n (NCGFOA) from 2005-2012 and as its President in 2011, earning the designatio­n of Most Outstandin­g NCGFOA Finance Officer in 2011-2012. He also served on the Debt Committee for the Government Finance Officers Associatio­n of U.S. and Canada from 2012-2018 to facilitate policy changes in Washington, D.C. and assist local and state government­s across North America with their debt management needs.

Miller has also made significan­t contributi­ons to several local organizati­ons, serving on the Catawba County United Way Board from 2004-2010 (Campaign Chair in 2007 and President in 2009) and again from 2016-2022, as well as St. Stephens Lutheran Church, MS in Hickory on its Endowment Board, Finance/Facility Board, and currently serves as its Treasurer.

Miller lives in Hickory with his wife, Tracy. They have three children.
