Cobras softball swept by CVCC on Tuesday night Red Hawks’ Lail pitched 10 K, one-hitter in Game 1

Recap: Caldwell Community College & Technical Institute’s softball team dropped two, one run games to host Catawba Valley Community College, falling 2-1 in game one and 6-5 in game two on Tuesday at Stanford park in Hickory.

In game one’s pitchers’ duel, Caldwell took a 1-0 in the top of the fourth when Skylar Banks scored on a Catawba Valley error. The Red Hawks would answer in the bottom of the inning on a Chesney Stikeleath­er solo homerun. In the bottom of the sixth inning, Catawba Valley’s Kayla Hollar hit a solo homerun to give the hosts a 2-1 lead and the eventual victory.

Caldwell’s Belle Curry took the loss in the circle, going six innings and allowing only two runs while surrenderi­ng five hits and striking out 12. Mayson Lail took the win, throwing seven innings and allowing one run off of one hit while striking out 10.

In game two, Caldwell trailed 3-2 going into the fifth inning when Logan Harris connected on a homerun to tie the game 3-3. Caldwell would get two more runs in the inning off of backto-back bases loaded walks to take a 5-3 advantage. In the bottom of the seventh, Catawba Valley got a two RBI double from Hollar and the game winning RBI single by Rileigh Farr to complete the come from behind victory. In the losing effort, the Cobras got RBI from Banks, Harris, Emily Dudley , Mattie Poulos , and Carlee Tart.

Caldwell falls to 11-9 overall while Catawba Valley improves to 9-2. The Cobras return to action on Saturday at the Hudson Optimist Park for a 2PM doublehead­er against Kankakee (IL) Community College.
