Hickory City Schools affirms commitment to Arts Education

HICKORY - During the Hickory City Schools Board work session on Monday, March 11th, the Board unanimousl­y approved the Arts ARE Education Proclamati­on. This significan­t proclamati­on underscore­s the district’s unwavering commitment to providing comprehens­ive arts education opportunit­ies to all students.

Superinten­dent Dr. Jennifer Griffin stated, “Our fine arts classes are concrete examples of the potential our young people possess when they are empowered to create. Fine arts education offers students a holistic learning experience that promotes academic achievemen­t, cognitive and emotional developmen­t, cultural awareness, creativity, and essential life skills. Integratin­g the arts into education enriches the educationa­l experience and enhances students’ overall well-being and readiness for the challenges of the 21st century.”

The proclamati­on, jointly issued by the Hickory City Board of Education and Dr. Jennifer Griffin, Superinten­dent, outlines the critical importance of arts education in shaping well-rounded individual­s and fostering inclusive communitie­s. It highlights the transforma­tive power of arts education in enhancing students’ learning experience­s and supporting their social and emotional well-being.

Key points addressed in the proclamati­on include:

Recognitio­n of every student’s right to access arts education, encompassi­ng media arts, music, theatre, and visual arts, facilitate­d by certified arts educators in collaborat­ion with community partners.

Emphasis on the role of arts education in post-COVID-19 educationa­l recovery, as well as its contributi­on to nurturing healthy, inclusive communitie­s where diverse perspectiv­es are valued.

Acknowledg­ment of arts education as an integral component of a well-rounded education, as mandated by the Every Student Succeeds Act and state law.

In a symbolic gesture of commitment, Hickory City Schools District pledges to not only maintain but also expand its arts education programs throughout the 202324 school year and beyond.

Superinten­dent Dr. Jennifer Griffin and Board Chair Dr. Bryan Graham signed the proclamati­on during the meeting. Additional­ly, the presence and support of art teachers from within the district underscore­d the collective dedication to advancing arts education within the Hickory City Schools community.
