Apprehensive about trying facial fillers? Miami’s Dr. Rian Maercks tests them on himself first...

“I always had a romantic notion of becoming a doctor, but was always a creative thinker,” says Dr. Rian A. Maercks, founder and medical director of The Maercks Institute in Miami. After earning his medical degree from Duke University, Dr. Maercks found that through plastic surgery he could combine reasoning with creativity and aesthetics. “A plastic surgeon has to analyze and think about the best solution for each unique patient,” he explains. “It’s really advanced surgical problem-solving with aesthetics on top as icing on the cake.”

Today, the in-demand physician has earned accolades from the International Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery for his innovations, including cold subfascial breast augmentation—a procedure providing long-term control of breast shape and appearance—and aesthetic facial balancing, which uses the body’s own fat to rejuvenate the face. Much of the doctor’s aesthetic ingenuity can be credited to testing out his practices on himself (and posting them to Youtube). Case in point: In 2013, Dr. Maercks injected 35 syringes of dermal filler into his own face to show the public that his technique of strategically placing fillers throughout the face will provide a natural look, instead of the overdone, dreaded “sausage lip.” “I haven’t retouched my face, and I am really happy with the way it has evolved because I look a lot younger and more balanced than I did five years ago,” he says. “Fillers have revolutionized our ability to create natural, healthy, and beautiful outcomes.” The Maercks Institute of Miami, 4500 Biscayne Blvd., Miami, 305328-8256; themaercks institute.com
