SIMPLY THE BEST
I think the Top Coastal Architects issue must be my favorite of the year. I love to check out what is new in the world of coastal design and the tastemakers who create these beautiful seaside houses.
This year, I am blown away by the rms we’ve gathered in this issue and all that they have accomplished—including winning numerous awards, being featured in multiple national magazines, and publishing many design books, and one of my all-time favorite classical architects, and one who brings buzz to the residential architecture world with a new collaboration, is Gil Schafer. He teamed up with Aimee and Kevin Buccellato to create Schafer Buccellato Architects this fall.
Kevin and Aimee are old friends of Gil’s and are leaving the academic world of Notre Dame and joining Gil Schafer in private practice.
Schafer does not stop there, however. His latest book, Home at Last, is the third in a three-part series. This book shows how houses can change and evolve with life. I’m looking forward to reading it this fall. Other architects who have new books out are Peter Pennoyer, Tom Kligerman, and Michael Imber, to name just a few. They all join Schafer in the realm of Top Coastal Architects.
Although I am a classicist at heart, I can’t help but fall in love with many of the modern designs featured in the issue. Blaze Makoid Architects has outdone itself with a modern beach house tucked among the dunes in the Hamptons. The house is truly a masterpiece and a collaboration between architect, landscape architect, and interior designer.

Butler Armsden Architects creates a modern house with commanding San Francisco Bay views. The structure is built using natural materials such as limestone and hemlock. The indoor/outdoor spaces are blurred in this breathtaking abode perched high on a hill. See page 16 for the story.
We hope you enjoy this issue that celebrates coastal architects across the country who create dream houses for their clients and inspiration for us.
