Florida reported 11,458 new coronaviru­s cases on Independen­ce Day, shattering its record for daily reported cases in the state since the pandemic began.

The single-day record was last broken on Thursday with over 10,000 new cases. To date, the state health department has reported a total of 190,052 cases.

Thursday and Saturday’s recordbrea­king reports are followed by June 27’s report with 9,585 cases, Friday’s report of 9,488 cases, and 8,942 cases posted on June 26, according to the department’s data.

The death toll is now 3,702, which includes 18 new fatalities reported

Saturday.

Central Florida now has 31,313 cases, up 2,196 from a day earlier. There are 1,184 new cases in Orange for a total of 13,262, 246 in Polk for 4,906, 218 in Seminole for 3,205, 255 in Osceola for 2,781, 108 in Volusia for 2,604, 87 in Brevard for 2,453, 91 in Lake for 1,694, and seven in Sumter for 408. The region accounts for 16% of state cases.

Two of the deaths reported Saturday were in Central Florida: an 85-year-old man in Osceola County, and an 84-year-old man in Brevard County. These fatalities bring the regional death toll to 327.

Polk County still has the most coronaviru­s fatalities in Central Florida with 105, followed by 59 in Orange, 58 in Volusia, 26 in Osceola, 23 in Lake, 20 in Seminole, 19 in Brevard and 17 in Sumter.

South Florida, home to 29% of Florida’s population, accounts for about 42% of cases with 80,453 total. That includes 4,589 new cases reported Saturday among Miami-Dade (44,729), Broward (19,575), and Palm Beach (16,149) counties.

South Florida’s reported deaths on Saturday rose by 12 for a total of 1,988, about 54% of the state’s total.

The latest positivity rate for new cases was 14%. June 23 marked the highest rate over the past two weeks with 16% of new cases testing positive.

Nearly 2.8 million people have been infected with coronaviru­s in the U.S., and over 129,000 have died.
