3 cheerleading squads claim titles
Lake Brantley, Lake Mary and Winter Park won Class 2A competitive cheer championships on Saturday in Lakeland.
Winter Park posted a score of 82.90 in the finals round to top Jupiter (80.70) in the medium division competition at the RP Funding Center.
Lake Mary earned a 76.30 score to top runner-up Lake Nona (72.6) in the extralarge squad competition.
Lake Brantley recorded an 86.60 score to win a non-tumbling title.
Celebration placed second with Lake Howell third behind Lakeland in another non-tumbling division.
Hagerty was runner-up and West Orange fourth in the large team division.
DeLand was runner-up in the small squad co-ed competition.
Soccer: Lake Nona, the top-rated boys soccer team according to FHSAA power ratings, improved to 8-0-4 with a 5-1 win against Edgewater (6-4-8) on Friday night.
Cypress Creek (11-1-2), which is No. 2 on that area list, scored a 1-0 home win against Ocoee (7-3-4) on Friday — one week after posting a 1-0 home win vs. Celebration (9-1-5).
The Nos. 3 and 4 area teams in the rankings are Winter Park (10-1-3), which has lost only to Lake Nona, and Trinity Prep (9-1-1), which tied the Wildcats 0-0 in December.
The area’s two top-rated girls soccer teams, Oviedo (11-0-1) and Bishop Moore (11-3-1), played to a 2-2 tie on Thursday night.
OCP cruises: Orlando Christian Prep, top-ranked in the Sentinel Super 16 boys basketball rankings, scored two lopsided wins in the Wally Keller Classic in Punta Gorda.
The Warriors (18-0), winners of 38 straight over two seasons, used a suffocating defense to win 73-43 on Saturday afternoon against Jacksonville Jackson (11-4), the fifth-ranked team in Class 3A.
Class 2A OCP, No. 1 across all seven classifications in the FHSAA power ratings, led by seven after one quarter and then blew the game open by outscoring the Tigers 15-0 in the second period.
Senior guard Omar Figueroa led the Warriors with 18 points and 7 rebounds. Standout juniors A.J. Brown and Ven-Allen Lubin scored 17 and 13.
Figueroa scored 22 on Friday as OCP beat the Wally Keller host team, Punta Gorda Charlotte, 53-38. He made eight of his 13 3-point shot attempts in the two wins.
OCP plays at Super 16 No. 11 Kissimmee Osceola (11-6) on Tuesday night.
More hoops: Senior guard Zavien Williams scored his 1,000th career point as No. 7 Windermere Prep (12-5) won 72-48 at Seffner Christian (8-11) on Saturday.
In Friday-night basketball, No. 5 Olympia (14-4) won 62-51 at Seminole (8-5), which saw an eight-game win streak snapped.
No. 3 Dr. Phillips (14-3) won 63-55 against Timber Creek. (4-7).
No. 9 Apopka (12-5) repelled a late rally by No. 8 Edgewater (11-6) to win 68-65 on the road.
No. 12 CFCA (12-6), ranked third in 2A, won 53-48 at No. 3 3A Jacksonville Bishop Snyder (13-5).
No. 13 The Master’s Academy (13-4) won 72-65 against No. 14 The First Academy (8-6).
No. 16 Kissimmee Gateway (7-1) pulled out a 49-48 win against visiting Lake Nona (7-4) on a free throw by Jeremy Velez with 1.2 seconds to go.
Leesburg (9-3) won 78-69 against the fifth-ranked team in Class 4A, Tampa Catholic (13-4), to continue a six-game winning streak.
Oviedo (11-9) won at crosstown rival Hagerty (8-11), 49-42.
Jones (5-10) won 62-53 at home vs. Evans (10-10).
