Florida reports 110 coronaviru­s resident deaths, 5,549 new cases

Florida’s resident death toll from coronaviru­s rose to 30,734 with the addition of 110 more reported fatalities on Saturday while also adding 5,459 more positive COVID-19 cases to bring the total to 1,903,682.

February has reported 4,145 resident fatalities in February, an average of 159 a day. Those deaths, though, were from several previous days, as it can take weeks and sometimes several months for reports to appear. With 546 non-Florida resident deaths, including 8 new reported Saturday, the state’s combined total stands at 31,280.

Florida has seen about one in 699 of its residents die from the virus, while nationally it’s closer to one in 642 people, and worldwide it’s at about one in 3,094 of the planet’s 7.8 billion population.

With a population of about 21.5 million, about one in 11 people in the state have now been infected.

That number is closer to one in 12 nationally and one in 69 worldwide.

Across the state, 3,862 people were hospitaliz­ed with COVID-19 as of Feb 27, 2:11 p.m. including 192 in Orange County, 86 in Osceola, 67 in Lake and 58 in Seminole.

To date, 80,467 people have been hospitaliz­ed in Florida, according to the state’s report, which includes 229 newly reported hospitaliz­ations since Friday’s update.

Statewide, 2,973,782 people have received the first dose of the coronaviru­s vaccine, of which 1,642,800 people have received the second dose. The count is a snapshot through Friday, based on the report released Saturday.

Of those who have received at least the first dose, 2,256,760 are over the age of 65.

To date, 11,044,794 people have been tested in Florida, 32,769 more than Thursday’s total.

Statewide, the latest positivity rate reported Saturday for Friday’s test results by the Florida Department of Health was 5.61%, but that’s for new cases only and excludes anyone who previously tested positive. For all tested, the positivity rate was 7.41%.

Central Florida added 1,155 cases on Saturday for a total of 335,713: That includes 362 more in Orange for 114,010; 195 more in Polk for 56,954; 106 in Osceola for 36,713; 116 in Volusia for 34,454; 146 in Brevard for 33,885; 112 in Seminole for 27,169; 93 in Lake for 24,538; and 25 in Sumter for 7,990.

There were 7 new deaths across all eight Central Florida counties bringing the region’s toll to 5,282. Polk County has the most coronaviru­s fatalities in the region with 1,139, followed by 1,091 in Orange, 741 in Brevard, 654 in Volusia, 555 in Lake, 441 in Osceola, 423 in Seminole and 238 in Sumter.

Central Florida accounts for more than 17.6% of the cases statewide and more than 17.2% of the deaths.
