Study reveals the top 4 superhero opening weekends

- By Kathleen Christiansen

The recent debuts of the feature film “Zack Snyder’s Justice League” and Marvel Studios’ series “The Falcon and The Winter Soldier” inspired Reelgood to determine the biggest opening weekends for superhero TV shows or movies.

The movie and TV streaming search engine included all superhero movies and TV shows that premiered on any subscription-video-on-demand platform between October 2020 and March 2021. The rankings were determined based on streaming and engagement share among 2 million Reelgood users in the United States.

The premiere of “WandaVision” came in first place, followed by “Zack Snyder’s Justice League” in second, “Wonder Woman 1984 in third and the first episode of “The Falcon and The Winter Soldier” rounding out the top four.

Reelgood also created a map showing which title — “Zack Snyder’s Justice League” or “The Falcon and The Winter Soldier” — was watched the most during the opening weekend in each state across the United States. Florida chose the former.

Interested in watching any of these? Here’s a bit more info about each superhero movie or show.

‘WandaVision’

Wanda Maximoff (Scarlet Witch played by Elizabeth Olsen) and Vision (Paul Bettany) live in an ideal suburban paradise, though everything isn’t as it seems in this Marvel Cinematic Universe miniseries that pays homage to sitcoms — including “I Love Lucy,” “Bewitched,” “I Dream of Jeannie,” “All in the Family,” “The Brady Bunch,” “Full House” and

“Malcolm in the Middle” — through the decades. The series debuted on Jan. 15.

‘Zack Snyder’s Justice League’

Find out what the 2017 “Justice Movie” would have looked like if Snyder hadn’t stepped away from production after a family tragedy. Also known as the “Snyder Cut,” this film follows Batman (Ben Affleck) as he joins forces with Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot) to recruit a team of metahumans — Aquaman (Jason Momoa), Cyborg (Ray Fisher) and The Flash (Ezra Miller) — to protect the world from an approaching threat after Superman’s (Henry Cavill) ultimate sacrifice. The movie premiered March 18.

Watch “Zack Snyder’s Justice League” on HBO Max.

‘Wonder Woman 1984’

The sequel to 2017’s “Wonder Woman” takes place in the 1980s, where Wonder Woman (Galdot) faces new enemies Maxwell Lord (Pedro Pascal) and The Cheetah (Kristen Wiig). The movie premiered Dec. 25 last year.

Catch “Wonder Woman” at select movie theaters or buy it on-demand starting at $19.99 on Amazon Prime, Google Play or YouTube.

‘The Falcon and The Winter Soldier’

The Falcon (Anthony Mackie) and The Winter Soldier (Sebastian Stan) team up on a global adventure in this series that takes place after “Avengers: Endgame.” The miniseries debuted March 19.

Watch “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier” on Disney+. New episodes air Fridays.
