It’s been 30 years since Scott Perry’s senior high school football season ended in defeat against a bitter rival.

That memory resurfaced Friday night as Perry, in his 17th season as head coach at Lake Mary, led the Rams (3-0) to a 38-6 win at neighboring Lake Brantley (2-1).

“I played in this game,” Perry recalled. “I remember being exhausted on this field at the end of my senior year [in 1991] after losing the district championship, 14-13. We missed an extra point and two field goals.”

There was no such letdown Friday as Lake Mary, ranked No. 4 in the area Sentinel Super 16, exploded for 28 points in the second quarter and claimed its seventh consecutive win over the No. 13 Patriots.

The Rams turned three fumbles into scores and got two TDs each from senior QB Gunnar Smith and junior running back Manquez Lang.

Lang, a Lake Brantley transfer, carried the ball nine times for 64 yards. His second TD run resulted in a running clock as the Rams built a 35-0 lead with less than 10 minutes to go in the third quarter.

No. 14 Winter Park (2-1) walked into a hostile environment at No. 9 Boone (1-1) and rebounded from a blowout loss last week vs. Lake Mary.

The Wildcats opened a 20-point lead in the first half before holding off Boone down the stretch for a 26-21 win.

“We got beat up. We didn’t play well and things didn’t go our way,” Winter Park coach Tim Shifflet said of last week’s loss. “But for our kids to respond like that in seven days, it says a lot about their character, who they are and where they want to be at the end of the season.”

Amaris Shaw broke up a Boone pass attempt to seal the victory. Shaw had a monster game for the Wildcats while rushing for a touchdown and recorded an interception.

Around the area

Oniel Senatus scored seven touchdowns while leading Celebration (2-0) to a 48-8 home win vs. Lake Region (1-1) of Polk County.

Senatus, a junior, has 10 TDs in two games for the Storm, who are off to a running start after experiencing just one winning campaign in its previous 18 seasons of varsity football (7-4 in 2015).

Lake Nona (1-2) stopped a two-point conversion try by Evans (2-1) with one minute remaining for a 21-20 win.

The Lions broke a 14-14 tie on a fourth-quarter TD pass from Khari Reenie to Carson Pielock. After a muffed punt gave Evans a short field, the Trojans reached the end zone before coming up short on the conversion.

Reenie scored two TDs on short runs for Lake Nona. Zane Durant, a Penn State commit, came up big with two sacks and four tacklesfor-loss.

Oak Ridge (1-2) scored its first win in dramatic fashion, pulling out a 37-31 double overtime victory at Orlando University (1-2).

The Pioneers jumped out to a 19-0 lead before the Cougars scored 25 points to lead by six with 1:52 to go. Oak Ridge tied the score with 24 seconds to go in regulation.

Umatilla stopped a two-point conversion try by Discovery Charter (1-2) with 1:14 to go for its first win, 20-19. Jeric Hutto scored two TDs and Logan Bowling had one for the Bulldogs (1-2).

Friday’s game between The First Academy (2-0) and Orlando Christian Prep (0-1) was one of several area matchups affected by heavy rain and lightning. The contest was moved to Monday at TFA at 7 p.m. due to field conditions.

Poinciana (0-1) will resume its contest vs. Mulberry (1-1) on Monday at 6 p.m. The game was suspended due to lightning with Mulberry leading 7-6 late in the first quarter.

Mount Dora (0-2) plays at Harmony (1-1) on Wednesday in a game that was rescheduled from Week 1 due to COVID-19.

Setting the stage

Apopka junior running back Keyondray Jones rushed for 221 yards and one touchdown in leading the No. 3 Blue Darters (3-0) to a 28-14 victory at No. 11 Dr. Phillips (1-2).

Apopka was without three offensive starters due to injury, including senior QB Andrew McClain. Kaleb Hicks performed well in his place while scoring on a six-yard run and tossing an eight-yard TD pass to Quincy Frazier.

The Panthers scored twice in the second half as senior QB Curtis Argroves II found Joanes Fortlien for a 62-yard TD then later scored on a 28-yard scramble.

Apopka plays at Ocoee on Friday in a Class 8A District 3 battle of unbeatens.

Ocoee’s Charles Pierre ran for three touchdowns during a dominant second half as the No. 16 Knights (3-0) won 34-13 at No. 15 Olympia (2-1).

Pierre, who totaled 169 yards, broke through Olympia’s defense for a 75-yard TD run to give the Knights the lead for good at 14-7 inside the opening minute of the third quarter. Jalen Joiner added 124 yards on the ground and one TD.

“At halftime, we decided we were going to run more motions, bump out the middle linebacker, and we executed very well,” Pierre said.

Super 16 winners

No. 1 Seminole (3-0) cruised to a 62-0 victory vs. visiting Lyman (0-3) to claim its 29th win in 30 games over the past four seasons.

The defending 8A state champs tore off big play after big play in the first half while amassing 241 rushing yards and 168 passing yards.

Donta Whack, Trey Clark and Tyrone Williams each rushed for two touchdowns for the ‘Noles. Whack led the group with 160 yards on just six carries, including an 80-yard house call in the first quarter.

West Orange’s stifling defense held Wekiva (0-3) to only 88 yards during a 49-3 win. The No. 5 Warriors (2-1) opened the game with an 82-yard kick return for touchdown by Javan Robinson.

Senior WR Jayden Gibson finished with five receptions for 80 yards and two scores while catching passes from Tyler Huff and Trevor Jackson.

“We’ve always had a great defense,” West Orange head coach Mike Granato said. “We really challenged our guys on offense, especially the quarterback position and our receivers to help us, and they made some plays tonight.”

No. 6 Osceola (1-1) turned early turnovers into points during a 69-0 win at Tohopekaliga (1-2).

A fumble recovery resulted into a 14-0 lead when quarterback Chad Mascoe rushed for a short TD. Kaylon Walter intercepted a pass to set up a 15-yard TD pass from Mascoe to Ja’Keem Jackson.

“Not really a whole lot to say about a game like this,” first-year Osceola head coach Eric Pinellas said. “We wanted to come in here, execute our offense and get our younger guys some reps and we checked all those boxes.”
