FSU signee wraps high school career as champ
Orlando area teams captured five of the top seven places in the FHSAA Class 4A state swimming and diving championship meet and all of those teams are represented on the Orlando Sentinel’s 11-member All-Area team.
That list includes state runner-up Oviedo, third-place Windermere, West Orange in fourth, Winter Park in sixth and Boone in seventh. Also represented is Foundation Academy.
Swimmer of the Year Sarah Beth Cathcart
Oviedo, Sr.
Buzz: Cathcart was the area’s only girls state swimming champion with a school record 23.09-second victory in the Class 4A 50-yard freestyle final. That is an automatic All-American time based on the National Interscholastic Swim Coaches Association cutoffs. The FSU signee also placed third in the 100 free final with a time 50.50 and swam on second place 200 and 400 free relays that helped the Lions finish second in 4A.
All-Area swimmers and divers Caroline Chasser
Winter Park, Sr.
Buzz: Finished fourth in the 100 backstroke (56.93) and sixth in the 200 individual medley (2:06.64) in the 4A state meet. Also on two relays that reached finals.
Maya Foley
West Orange, Sr.
Buzz: Finished fourth in the 200 individual medley with a 2:04.62 and later sixth in the 500 free (4:59.68) in the 4A state meet.
Gabrielle Goodwin
Oviedo, Sr.
Buzz: Finished fourth in the Class 4A 500 freestyle (4:58.31) and seventh in the 200 free (1:53.01). Also helped the Lions take second place in the 400 relay.
Lanie Gutch
Boone, Jr.
Buzz: The 2020 4A state diving champion was the runner-up for the second consecutive season with a 485.20 score.
Antonina Harned
Windermere, Sr.
Buzz: The Nebraska signee won the 4A state diving championship with a 495.55 points score. She placed 11th at the 2022 USA Division Junior National Championships.
Kaylin Herbet
Oviedo, Sr.
Buzz: The state 100 free champ as a junior concluded a stellar high school career with second-place finishes in 50 free (23.23), 100 free (50.28), 200 free relay and 400 free relay.
Brooke Larweth
Windermere, Jr.
Buzz: Fourth in 50 free (23.50). Anchored the winning 200 free relay and 200 medley relay, where second-place 1:42.23 time broke the previous state meet record.
Addison Reese
Windermere, Jr.
Buzz: Had an auto-All American time of 53.79 for second in the 100 butterfly and was third the 200 free (1:49.05) in 4A. Also swam on the winning 200 free relay.
Marin Rose
Oviedo, Sr.
Buzz: Placed third in the 500 free (4:54.47) and fifth in the 200 free (1:51.72) in 4A state meet. Also swam on second-place 200 and 400 free relay performances.
Emma Sundermyer
Foundation Academy, Jr.
Buzz: She placed third in the Class 1A 200 free final with an arealeading time of 1:49.00. Sundermyer also was fifth in the 100 free with a fast 50.85.
