No. 1 Lake Mary survives scare Round 1 playoff results

- By Buddy Collings

Lake Mary, the No. 1-ranked team in all of Class 4 Metro, was on the brink of defeat in the first round of the state playoffs Friday night.

The Rams (10-1) forced a turnover in the red zone and scored with 1:43 to go to pull out a 42-38 road win against spirited Boone (5-6), the No. 8 seed in an eightteam region bracket.

The winning 14-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Noah Grubbs to Carson Hinshaw marked Lake Mary’s first lead.

When Dylan Wilson intercepted a pass with 1:01 remaining, the entire Lake Mary sideline and contingent of fans exhaled and celebrated a victory that was anything but easy.

“I’m proud of my guys for fighting the entire game and never giving up,” Lake Mary coach Scott Perry said. “We earned an advance to next week, so I’m happy about that. We’ve got to get better so we can earn another one.”

Grubbs, a sophomore quarterback, threw 5 touchdown passes — three to Caden Harshbarger, who racked up 340 receiving yards. Grubbs finished with 516 passing yards but was intercepted twice. He also ran for a TD.

Boone receiver Isaiah Mizell had 4 touchdown catches — all on catch-and run plays.

He scored from 59 yards out to open the scoring and took a fourthdown pass from quarterback Sam Johnson 33 yards for a score that gave the Braves a 21-7 lead.

“Evans came to play,” Apopka coach Jeff Rolson said. “We knew they would. They have pride and they play hard. Our kids battled and did what we needed to do.”

Apopka’s Antwone Robinson blocked a punt and recovered the ball in the zone for the game’s first TD.
